Is Your Tap Water Safe?

The Bad

It could make you sick

Like your sneaking suspicion that the IT guy at work reads your e-mails, fears about tap water aren't entirely unfounded. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports 30 to 40 outbreaks of waterborne diseases from viruses, bacteria, and parasites in the U.S. each year -- and about half can be attributed to drinking water. While a few are serious, most result in minor problems, such as fever and diarrhea.. Which means your last bout of "food poisoning" may have come from your water glass!

It's not totally clean

"It's virtually impossible to make any water -- bottled or tap -- completely free of contaminants," says Daniel Giammar, Ph.D., assistant professor of environmental engineering at Washington University in St. Louis.. Most often, the amounts of chemicals found in tap water are minute, but if they do get too high, they can be harmful -- particularly if you're exposed for a long time

For instance, if the pipes in or leading to your home are older than the kids in High School Musical, they may leak lead, copper, or other impurities, which can't be monitored or filtered by your area's water supplier.."Lead typically ends up in water after it's transferred through old pipes that are decaying," explains Gina Solomon, MD, MPH, a senior scientist and physician with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC)

Virtually all municipalities use chlorine to purify water, and that can pose health problems. "Studies have tied high levels of chlorine byproducts to an increased risk of miscarriage," Dr. Solomon says. And there are plenty of potentially harmful chemicals the government doesn't require your local water supplier to monitor. A landmark 2005 study of tap water in 42 states by the Environmental Working Group found more than 140 unregulated chemicals, including MTBE, a gasoline additive, and phthalates, a group of compounds used to make plastic.. In 19 cases, water contaminants exceeded safe limits, though in many other instances, the EPA hadn't set limits, since these chemicals aren't regulated

It's worse in small towns or rural areas

Although big municipal water supplies aren't perfect, they are generally the best, says Charles Gerba, Ph.D., professor of environmental microbiology at the University of Arizona, Tucson.. Conversely, he says, "water systems that serve fewer than 10,000 people tend to have far greater problems with contamination because the funding needed to keep these facilities and their testing up-to-date often isn't available"

If you're one of the 43.5 million Americans who drink from a well, "the big problem is [potentially toxic] nitrates, which often get into the water from leaking septic tanks and fertilizers," Dr. Solomon says.. Nitrates have been linked to problems such as kidney disease and miscarriage

Contaminants in tap Water

Drugs in The Drinking Water

A five month investigation by the Associated Press has reported medication byproducts in the drinking water of 41 million Americans, but they aren't alone. In March 2008, the Associated Press released the results of their 5-month investigation into the presence of pharmaceuticals in the water supply of 24 major metropolitan areas.. They found that the concentrations were well below the normal medical dosage, in tiny quantities of parts per billion or trillion, but the fact that antibiotics, antidepressants, and hormones were found in the drinking water of an estimated 41 million Americans has raised concerns among health officials

The contamination is not just an urban problem. Caffeine was found in the water supply of less populated areas and those who draw from a well are at risk of contamination from failed septic systems.. Other countries are also at risk, studies have found Asia, Australia, Canada, and Europe to also have pharmaceuticals in their lakes, rivers, reservoirs, and streams

The pharmaceutical industry needs to take responsibility! The drug makers need to either re-engineer their medications to not make their way into the water supply or to pay for the cleanup and new treatment methods that are necessary

Additional treatment methods and research are necessary because some compounds become more toxic when presented with chlorine, a common treatment chemical.. Also, technologies such as reverse osmosis, which would solve the problem, are too expensive to initiate on the large-scale(and should be funded by the pharmaceutical industry)

The Good

It's regulated more rigorously than bottled

Even in small towns, municipal tap water generally goes through more screening than Lindsay Lohan's blood-alcohol levels. Suppliers may take hundreds of samples daily. When a testing facility finds a contaminant, such as lead, they remove it before the water is shipped to your home.. Plus, municipal water is overseen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which has more regulatory oversight than the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which oversees standards for bottled water. The FDA, by contrast, tests water from bottling plants less frequently (usually just once a week), and its criteria for bacteria and parasites in bottled water are more lax, according to a 1999 report from the NRDC.. It's not that bottled water is dangerous but tap water is held to higher safety standards

It's better for the environment

Every time you drink bottled water, you're doing serious damage to your tree-hugger creed. "It takes three to four times the amount of water in the bottle just to make the plastic for the bottle,".. "And that's not including how much oil is used and how much carbon dioxide is created when the water is shipped to the store"

It's much less expensive

Two dollars for 24 ounces doesn't seem outrageous, but when you compare it with the amount of money you can save drinking tap, you're looking at the difference between a Gucci clutch and a paper bag. "Gallon for gallon, bottled water costs more than gasoline.. And in some cases, you're paying for little more than the bottle itself: At least 25 percent (some experts say as much as 40 percent) of bottled water is nothing more than processed tap water. Beverage companies aren't legally required to disclose the source of their water, although Aquafina -- the most popular bottled brand in the U.S. -- recently agreed to begin labeling its water as "municipally sourced.." If it doesn't say 'spring water,' chances are it comes from the same or a similar source as tap water,"

10 Benefits of Using a Water Filter

1 ~ Water filters provide better tasting and better smelling drinking water by removing chlorine and bacterial contaminants

2 ~ Point-of-use water filters remove lead from drinking water immediately prior to consumption, thus preventing this harmful substance from entering the body

3 ~ The purchase of a countertop filter results in a source of clean, healthy water that costs much less than bottled water

4 ~ Water filters greatly reduce the risk of rectal cancer, colon cancer, and bladder cancer by removing chlorine and chlorine byproducts from drinking water

5 ~ A solid block carbon water filter can selectively remove dangerous contaminants from drinking water while retaining healthy mineral deposits that balance the pH of drinking water

6 ~ Drinking clean, filtered water protects the body from disease and leads to overall greater health

7 ~ A water filter provides clean, healthy water for cooking, as well as drinking, at the convenience of tap water

8 ~ Water filters reduce the risk of gastrointestinal disease by more than 33 percent by removing cryptosporidium and giardia from drinking water

9 ~ Drinking pure water is especially important for children.. Water filters provide the healthiest water for children's developing immune systems

10 ~ Water filters offer the last line of defense between the body and the over 2100 known toxins that may be present in drinking water

Cost-effective eco-friendly fluoride-free filter water

Clearing Things Up

Get a water report

By law, your water supplier must mail you one annually. If it doesn't, call and request one..(If you don't know your supplier, visit Where You Live Once you have a copy of the report, find the chart that lists potential contaminants and look for the column marked "violation" or "exceeds limits," If you see a check mark or a "yes," consider buying a filter to remove those impurities

Test your tap water

Buy a home-testing kit. Most DIY tests provide strips or small vials that change color for easy-to-read results.. Look for one that measures bacteria, nitrates, lead, and chlorine, such as Watersafe's All-in-One ($20, discovertesting. com).. If you have a well or old pipes that could be leaching chemicals, it's best to have your water tested by a local lab or your county's cooperative extension program

Buy a filter

Filtering your water is a good idea no matter what, but it's crucial if you have young children, are pregnant, or have a chronic illness that affects your immune system. Even if your city or town has extremely good water quality, it can't hurt. Think of it as a safety net.. If your water is from a well, a charcoal filtration system removes both bacteria and chemical pollutants.. Not all water filters eliminate fluoride from water, you must purchase a special fluoride water filter that has been specially designed to remove this element. Similarly, bottled water may also still contain fluoride and other elements.. For more on fluoride water filtration click here The best way to keep water truly fresh and pure is to store it in a glass container. Plastic bottles can leach plastic byproducts into the water, affecting both taste and purity.. Visit Aquasana to learn more

Filter your shower water

"Even chlorine levels that are below the EPA limit can dry skin and worsen conditions such as eczema and psoriasis," says Karyn Grossman, M.D., chief of the dermatology division at Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California.. To remove chlorine, she recommends installing a filter that attaches to your shower head, such as the iWater Shower Purification System ($50, myiwater. com)

Take it with you

To make tap water more convenient for travel, put it in a washable stainless-steel bottle, such as the Klean Kanteen ($20, REI. com).. Water bottles made of regular plastic, when reused, can harbor bacteria, and they aren't made to withstand the heat of a dishwasher

Buy domestic

If you can't break your bottled-water addiction, look for a brand that hasn't been shipped across the world, the less distance the water has to travel, the fewer greenhouse gases are produced..but I must say and will cover this in my next post:

Goal: Make Tap Water Safe for Everyone!

The bottom line is that we have invested considerably in highly efficient municipal water delivery systems that bring this precious liquid straight to our kitchen faucets any time we need it..Instead of taking that for granted and relying on bottled water instead, we need to make sure our tap water is clean and safe for all!

What's in That Bottle?

Remember the drinking fountain, that once ubiquitous, and free, source of H2O? It seems quaint now. Instead, bottled water is everywhere, in offices, airplanes, stores, homes and restaurants across the country. We consumed over eight billion gallons of the stuff in 2006, a 10 percent increase from 2005. It's refreshing, calorie-free, convenient to carry around, tastier than some tap water and a heck of a lot healthier than sugary sodas..But more and more, people are questioning whether the water, and the package it comes in, is safe, or at least safer than tap water -- and if the convenience is worth the environmental impact

Evocative names and labels depicting pastoral scenes have convinced us that the liquid is the purest drink around.. "But no one should think that bottled water is better regulated, better protected or safer than tap," says Eric Goldstein, co-director of the urban program at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), a nonprofit organization devoted to protecting health and the environment

Yes, some bottled water comes from sparkling springs and other pristine sources. But more than 25 percent of it comes from a municipal supply. The water is treated, purified and sold to us, often at a thousandfold increase in price. Most people are surprised to learn that they're drinking glorified tap water, but bottlers aren't required to list the source on the label. Labels can be misleading at best, deceptive at worst. In one notorious case, water coming from a well located near a hazardous waste site was sold to many bottlers. At least one of these companies labeled its product "spring water.." In another case, H2O sold as "pure glacier water" came from a public water system in Alaska

The controversy isn't simply about tap vs. bottled water; most people drink both, knowing the importance of plenty of water. What they may not know is that some bottled water may not be as pure as they expect. The NRDC tested more than 1,000 bottles of 103 brands of water. (This is the most recent major report on bottled water safety.) While noting that most bottled water is safe, the organization found that at least one sample of a third of the brands contained bacterial or chemical contaminants, including carcinogens, in levels exceeding state or industry standards.. Since the report, no major regulatory changes have been made and bottlers haven't drastically altered their procedures, so the risk is likely still there

Bottled Water Facts

* The United States is the world's leading consumer of bottled water. In 2006, bottled water consumption in the US reached a record 8.3 billion gallons, 185 million gallons of which was imported.. The total amount spent on bottled water was over $11 billion

* In contrast to tap water, which is distributed through an energy-efficient infrastructure, transporting bottled water long distances involves burning massive quantities of fossil fuels

* Making bottles to meet Americans' demand for bottled water requires more than 1.. 5 million barrels of oil annually, enough to fuel some 100,000 US cars for a year

* It costs more money to drink bottled water than to put gas in your car--up to five times more--due mainly to its packaging and transportation

* 86 percent of plastic water bottles used in the United States become garbage or litter

* Buried water bottles can take up to 1,000 years to biodegrade

* Bottled water companies do not have to release their water-testing results to the public, whereas municipalities do

The Plastic Problem

Most bottled water comes in polyethylene terephthalate bottles, indicated by a number 1, PET or PETE on the bottle's bottom.. The bottles are generally safe, says Ken Smith, PhD, immediate past chair of the American Chemical Society's division of environmental chemistry.. But scientists say when stored in hot or warm temperatures, the plastic may leach chemicals into the water

It's not just where you store your water, but what you do with it as you carry it with you. Many people sip from a bottle that's been sitting in a hot car, a potentially dangerous move.. "Leaving bottled water out in the car changes the chemical equilibrium so that the materials from the plastic go into the water faster," says Smith

Last year, scientists in Germany found that the longer a bottle of water sits around (in a store, in your home), the more antimony it develops. High concentrations of antimony can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.. In the study, levels found were below those set as safe by the EPA, but it's a topic that needs more research

Last summer, a National Institutes of Health (NIH) committee agreed that bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical found in polycarbonate (used to make watercooler jugs, sport-water bottles and other hard plastics, but not PET), may cause neurological and behavioral problems in fetuses, babies and kids. A separate NIH-sponsored panel found that the risk was even greater, saying that adult exposure to BPA likely affects the brain, the female reproductive system and the immune system.. The FDA has reviewed these reports and says it will keep monitoring the data to see if the agency needs to take regulatory action

The potential health risks are important to understand, but bottled
water also affects the health of the planet

Manufacturing plastic is resource-intensive and yields various nasty emissions that contribute to global warming and degradation of water quality. It's made from non-renewable resources, and for all intents and purposes, it never biodegrades (although some specialized variations have been made specifically to do so). Yes, we'll run out of oil eventually, but we'll always have our plastic garbage.. Add to this the growing suspicion that plastic use may lead to serious health problems

"Bottled water is an increasingly growing business, and with that comes a whole lot of environmental impact that can be avoided by a turn of the faucet," says Jenny Powers of the NRDC. While we struggle to cut down on our consumption of fossil fuels, bottled water increases them. Virgin petroleum is used to make PET, and the more bottles we use, the more virgin petroleum will be needed to create new bottles. Fossil fuels are burned to fill the bottles and dis-tribute them.. (It's not just bottled water, but juices, soda and other beverages packed in plastic that add to this waste)

Some brands of water come from islands and countries thousands of miles away, and shipping bottles can cause carbon pollution to spill into the water and spew into the air

Then there's the waste of water itself, says Todd Jarvis, PhD, associate director of the Institute for Water and Watersheds at Oregon State University.. According to his calculations, it takes about 72 billion gallons of water a year, worldwide, just to make the empty bottles

Treating and filtering tap water for bottling creates even more waste. By some estimates, it takes about two liters of water to make every liter you see on store shelves.. "Bottled water has a significant environmental burden," says the NRDC

Demystifying Bottled Water

..

What You Can Do

Try the tap again ~ First, check it out. If your water comes from a public source (rather than a well), you should get a water-quality or consumer-confidence report from the water company once a year. It's also available at any time from the local water utility. Read the report carefully, making sure not only that your water has received a passing grade overall but also that contaminants haven't exceeded the maximum allowable levels, even for a short while. If you have well water, get it tested every year.. For more information, call the EPA's toll-free Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800-426-4791, or visit the website for the Campaign for Safe and Affordable Drinking Water

Home Water Filters ~ Even though tap water is often as safe or safer than bottled, a filter is sometimes advisable for both purity and taste reasons.. Facts About Water Filters from the Real Money newsletter provides an excellent overview to help you decide whether you need a home filter and if so, what kind to buy.. Consumer Reports also provides an in-depth comparison of the pros and cons of various methods of home filtration—from simple pitchers to under-the-sink installations.. Note that most water filters, Brita, Pur, etc are readily available in many chain stores

Get a canteen or bottle ~ Carry your plain or filtered tap water in a reusable stainless steel or lined drinking container, and clean it between uses. Some come with an easy-to-tote strap.. You can find stainless steel versions from Klean Kanteen and New Wave Enviro, and the colorful bottles from SIGG..Go glass! Aquasana offers glass water storage bottles, remember to recycle!

SIGG Bottle

Think twice about the office watercooler ~ If it's made of polycarbonate, it has the potential to leach BPA, a chemical that can cause neurological problems, among other things.. And have you ever seen anyone actually clean the watercooler? Probably not!

TAKE ACTION!

Rethink Drinking Bottled Water

..

If you stick with plastic, some choices are better than others
Look for the numbers on the bottom of the container

AVOID (notorious leachers)

3 (PVC)
6 (polystyrene)
7 (a catchall category—includes polycarbonate hard plastic camping and baby bottles)

BETTER

2 (HDPE)
4 (LDPE)
5 (PP)

A few additional plastic pointers:

Camping gear giant, Nalgene, for one, sells mostly hard plastic, tinted polycarb bottles but also offers an opaque 2 HDPE bottle.. It's less stylish, but apparently better for you

In response to customer demand for plastic bottles made without Bisphenol A, Nalgene has developed a new line of BPA-free bottles

If you have a 1 plastic bottle you're thinking of using, this type is also considered relatively safer, but isn't commonly used to manufacture reusable containers. It is used to make soda bottles. However, 1 bottles are hard to clean thoroughly.. And just refilling your soda bottle over and over might net you a not-so-healthy swig of bacteria with your cool beverage

And as always if you choose to use plastic please remember to recycle!
