A joint Russian-Indian company has started the development of a cruise missile capable of flying at Mach 5, which will make it 'impossible to intercept'. BrahMos-2 will be the next generation of the highly successful the BrahMos missile already used by Indian military
The news came from the head of BrahMos company, Sivathanu Pillai during the visit of Russian Defence Minister Anatoly Serdiukov
The BrahMos missile (the acronym stands for Brahmaputra-Moscow) has been in development since 1998 and had its first successful test launch in 2001
Russia provided the design of its P-800 Oniks missile as the basis of the project while India developed its guidance system. It has a maximum speed of Mach 2. 8, making it is the world's fastest cruise missile
The BrahMos-2 is expected to have twice the speed of the current version, which, the developers say, will make it practically immune to all existing missile defence systems
MOSCOW, Oct 11 (Xinhua) -- Russia's Tu-95MS strategic bombers launched cruise missiles Saturday following an earlier report that it test-launched a long-distance ballistic missile in the same day, the Interfax news agency reported
"The Tu-95MS aircraft of Russia's Long Range Aviation took off from tactical airfields and successfully launched training cruise missiles in the Arctic region of the country," Col. Lieut Vladimir Drik, aide to the Russian Air Forces commander said
The missiles accurately hit training targets at the firing range, he said
The launch was made as part of Stability-2008 exercises conducted with Belarus from Sept. 22 to Oct 21
It was reported earlier that Russia test-launched a long-distance ballistic missile Saturday as part of its Northern Fleet's military exercises It was the first time that a submarine launched the Sineva ballistic missile to its maximum range

SEVEROMORSK, October 11 (RIA Novosti) - A Russian submarine has for the first time test launched the Sineva ballistic missile to its maximum range, an aide to the Russian navy commander said Saturday
Captain 1st rank Igor Dygalo said the missile was launched Saturday from the Barents Sea to an equatorial part of the Pacific Ocean
"For the first time in Navy history, the launch was not to the Kura test range in Kamchatka [Russian Far East], but to the area of an equatorial part of the Pacific," Dygalo said, adding that the launch was made to check the preparedness of naval strategic nuclear forces
The Sineva launch was made as part of the Dvina tactical exercises of the Russian Northern Fleet, which are also part of larger-scale Stability-2008 exercises conducted with Belarus that started in September and will run until October 21
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev arrived on board the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier Saturday to observe the military exercises
The Barents Sea portion of the drills involves more than 5,000 military personnel, eight surface ships and five submarines
The exercises test Russia's strategic and regional deterrent and the structures of the Northern Fleet, particularly in relation to the naval strategic nuclear forces
The RSM-54 Sineva (NATO designation SS-N-23 Skiff) is a third-generation liquid-propellant intercontinental ballistic missile that entered service with the Russian Navy in July 2007 It has a maximum range of 8,300 km (5,200 miles) and can carry four or 10 nuclear warheads, depending on the modification
Russia's Strategic Missile Forces said last year that Russia would conduct at least 11 test launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles in 2008 and would double the number of launches after 2009 "to prevent the weakening of Russia's nuclear deterrent"

U. S dismisses exercises as insignificant Martin Arostegui Tuesday, October 14, 2008
SANTA CRUZ, Bolivia
A Russian fleet sailing toward the Caribbean for military exercises with Venezuela's navy next month reflects a chill in Russia-U.S. relations, though analysts are divided on whether the drill represents a threat to U.S. interests or is merely a demonstration to embarrass Washington
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez says the drill seals Venezuela's "strategic alliance with Russia," which he announced during a recent visit to Moscow, in which he signed billions of dollars worth of arms deals
The exercises, led by flagship Peter the Great, will mark Russia's largest naval deployment to the Caribbean in more than 20 years
Like Cuba's Fidel Castro, much of Mr. Chavez's political career has been based on his opposition to the United States
On Russia's end, many analysts see the move as a face-saving payback for U.S. naval deployments around the Black Sea to show support for Georgia in its conflict with Moscow that led to a brief war in August
U.S. Navy ships were used to bring food, medicine and other relief supplies to Georgia while keeping their distance from the Russian fleet
Still, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin warned that Russia would respond to the deployment in an unspecified manner and with "calm"
U.S. officials have dismissed the Russian maneuvers as insignificant
"I've once said that the old Russian ships could not make it that far down to Venezuela. And I had seen one report where I think they were actually being accompanied by tugboats," said U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack shortly after the Caribbean exercises were announced last month
Many analysts dismiss the exercises as a show of one-upmanship
"This is a case of naval diplomacy, rather than a demonstration of capability," said Jason Alderwick of the London-based International Institute of Strategic Studies. "It's all about strutting your stuff and [thumbing their nose] at the West"
************************************************ Russia may target missiles at sites in Central Europe - SMF ************************************************
MOSCOW, September 10 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Strategic Missile Forces could target some of their intercontinental ballistic missiles at U. S missile defense facilities in Poland and the Czech Republic, the forces' commander said on Wednesday
Col. Gen. Nikolai Solovtsov said Russia's leaders are concerned by the lack of transparency in the planning of the U. S missile defense system rather than the actual deployment of the missiles in Poland and radar in the Czech Republic
"Therefore, we have to take appropriate action," he said "I cannot rule out that should the country's military-political leadership make such a decision, some of our ICBMs could be targeted at missile defense sites in Poland and the Czech Republic, and subsequently at other such facilities"
He said the Strategic Missile Forces already had superior missiles that are capable of successfully penetrating the U. S missile defense system that will not be in place until 2015-2020
The commander said Russia will have a total of 50 silo-based Topol-M (SS-X-27) ICBMs by the end of the current year, while the number of mobile-launched Topol-Ms will increase to 15
The missile, with a range of about 7,000 miles (11,000 km), is said to be impervious to any current and future U.S. defense systems It is capable of making evasive maneuvers to avoid a kill using terminal phase interceptors, and carries targeting countermeasure systems and decoys
It is also shielded against radiation, electromagnetic pulses, nuclear blasts, and is designed to survive a hit from any form of laser technology
Col. Gen Solovtsov earlier said that Topol-M systems would be equipped with multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles (MIRV) in the next two or three years

28/08/2008 16:35 MOSCOW, August 28 (RIA Novosti) - A Russian Topol strategic missile test-launched on Thursday from the Plesetsk space center has successfully hit a designated target on the Kamchatka peninsula, a Strategic Missile Forces spokesman said
A joint team from SMF and Space Forces fired an RS-12M (SS-25 Sickle) ICBM at 14. 36 Moscow time (1036 GMT) from the Plesetsk space center in a launch that tested not only the performance characteristics of the missile but also the capabilities of a new warhead to penetrate strong missile defenses
"An experimental warhead hit a target at a testing range on the Kamchatka peninsula with high precision, demonstrating its capability to deliver pinpoint strikes on well-defended targets," Col Alexander Vovk said
The missile, whose service life was extended to 21 years last year, covered a distance of about 6,000 kilometers (over 3,700 miles) before it hit the target
"The performance data gathered during the test launch will be used to increase the effectiveness of future Russian mobile ballistic missile units," Vovk said, adding that the Topol ICBM remains the core of the Russian mobile strategic missile forces
Russia has been enhancing the performance characteristics of its ballistic missiles in response to U. S plans to place a missile-defense shield in central Europe near Russian borders
Vovk said that judging from experience the most economical and quickly achievable countermeasures against the deployment of missile-defense systems are the so-called asymmetrical measures
"These measures include enhanced "stealth" capability, a variability of flight trajectory and the use of warheads capable of penetrating any missile shield," he said
The RS-12M Topol has a maximum range of 10,000 km (6,125 miles) and can carry a single 550-kiloton nuclear warhead

MOSCOW, September 18 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian Navy on Thursday successfully tested a Bulava sea-launched ballistic missile, which hit targets on testing grounds in Kamchatka in Russia's Far East, a spokesman for the Defense Ministry said
The Bulava, designed by the Moscow Institute of Thermal Technology, is carried by Borey-class Project 955 nuclear-powered submarines
Fourth-generation Borey-class nuclear-powered submarines armed with Bulava missiles will form the core of Russia's fleet of modern strategic submarines
The first submarine in the series, the Yury Dolgoruky, was built at the Sevmash plant in the northern Arkhangelsk Region and will soon join the Russian Navy It will be equipped with 16 Bulava (SS-NX-30) ballistic missiles, each carrying up to 10 nuclear warheads and having a range of 8,000 kilometers (5,000 miles)
Two other Borey-class nuclear submarines, the Alexander Nevsky and the Vladimir Monomakh, are currently under construction at the Sevmash plant

MOSCOW (AP) — The Russian Navy successfully test-fired a new intercontinental ballistic missile on Thursday, officials said
The Bulava missile was launched from the submerged Dmitry Donskoy nuclear submarine in the White Sea, and its warheads hit a designated target at a military range on the far-eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, Navy spokesman Capt Igor Dygalo said in a statement
Russian Navy chief, Adm Vladimir Vysotsky, congratulated the submarine's crew on the successful launch, Dygalo said
Several previous tests of the Bulava had failed — casting doubt of Russia's ability to build what Russian officials have hailed as a key future component of the nation's nuclear forces
The Bulava was developed by the Moscow-based Thermal Technology Institute, which designed the new ground-based Topol-M missile and had no previous experience in building submarine-based missiles
According to published Russian reports, the Bulava is designed to have a range of 6,200 miles and carry six individually targeted nuclear warheads It is expected to equip new Borei-class nuclear submarines, the first of which, Yuri Dolgoruky, was to be commissioned later this year
A fourth-generation strategic nuclear submarine was launched during a special ceremony at a shipbuilding yard in northern Russia Sunday The Yury Dolgoruky, a Borey-class nuclear missile submarine, was built at the Sevmash plant in the northern Arkhangelsk Region It will be equipped with the Bulava ballistic missile, which is adapted from the Topol-M (SS-27) Speaking at the launching ceremony, Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov said the Yury Dolgoruky was Russia's first new-generation strategic nuclear submarine in the past 17 years The first deputy prime minister said earlier the submarine would undergo sea trials in 2007 and would be fully equipped with weaponry in 2008 After that, it will become operational in the Russian Navy The submarine has a length of 170 meters (580 feet), a body diameter around 13 meters (42 feet), and a submerged speed of about 29 knots It can carry up to 16 ballistic missiles

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Moscow is ready to help Cuba develop its own space center, Russia's space agency chief said on Wednesday after talks in Caracas with Venezuelan and Cuban officials, Itar-Tass news agency reported
Russia has stepped up efforts to develop closer links with both countries, which are ideological enemies of Washington, including sending Russian strategic bombers on a mission to Venezuela this month
"We have held preliminary discussions about the possibility of creating a space center in Cuba with our help," the chief of Russia's Federal Space Agency Anatoly Perminov was quoted as saying by Itar-Tass in Caracas
"With our Cuban colleagues, we discussed the possibilities of joint use of space equipment ... and the joint use of space communications systems," Perminov was quoted as saying
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin visited Cuba this week and together with representatives from several Russian ministries and large Russian companies looked at ways to help Cuba recover from hurricanes Gustav and Ike
Renewed Russian links to the Caribbean island will stir memories in Washington of the 1962 Cuban missile crisis when the United States and Soviet Union almost went to war over Soviet missile bases on Cuba, which is 90 miles from US shores

MOSCOW, September 27 (RIA Novosti) - A long-range sortie of the Russian naval task group to the Caribbean has drawn close attention from NATO, a Navy spokesman said on Saturday
A naval task force from Russia's Northern Fleet, comprising the nuclear-powered missile cruiser Pyotr Velikiy, the large ASW ship Admiral Chabanenko, and support ships, left a naval base in northern Russia early Monday to conduct training exercises in the Atlantic, including joint naval drills with the Venezuelan navy in November
"Patrol aircraft from the Norwegian Navy have flown four times near the Russian task group in the Norwegian Sea," Capt. 1st rank Igor Dygalo said, adding that the movements of the Russian convoy are also closely monitored by the U.K. HMS Argyll frigate
During the current tour of duty the Russian warships would participate in joint naval exercises with the Venezuelan navy in the Caribbean on November 10-14, in line with the 2008 training program and in order to expand military cooperation with foreign navies
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who recently visited Russia, earlier confirmed that Venezuela would hold joint naval exercises with Russian warships in the Caribbean and said the Russian navy would receive a warm welcome in the Latin American country
Russia announced last year that its Navy had resumed and would build up a constant presence in different regions of the world's oceans
A task force from the Northern Fleet, consisting of the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier, the Udaloy-Class large AWS ships Admiral Levchenko and Admiral Chabanenko, as well as auxiliary vessels, conducted from December 2007 to February 2008 a two-month tour of duty in the Mediterranean Sea and North Atlantic
"A naval task force from the Northern Fleet, comprising the nuclear-powered missile cruiser Pyotr Velikiy, the large ASW ship Admiral Chabanenko, and support ships, left the Severomorsk base early Monday to conduct training exercises in the Atlantic," Capt 1st Rank Igor Dygalo said
Pyotr Velikiy is a Kirov (Orlan) class nuclear-powered guided missile heavy cruiser, which has practically unlimited operational range and carries 20 SS-N-19 Shipwreck surface-to-surface missiles with either nuclear or high-explosive warheads and about 500 surface-to-air missiles of different types, supplemented by a large number of other weaponry
Dygalo said that during the tour of duty the Russian warships would participate in joint naval exercises with the Venezuelan navy on November 10-14, in line with the 2008 training program and in order to expand military cooperation with foreign navies
