MONTERREY, Mexico — Gunshots were fired Thursday near the U.S. Consulate in the Mexican city of Monterrey, prompting officials to suspend visa services and beef up security.
It was not clear if the consulate was the target

The gunshots came just five days after gunmen opened fire on the same consulate and threw a grenade that failed to explode

No one was injured in either incident and no arrests have been made

Soldiers and police quickly surrounded the building following Thursday's gunshots in the northern Mexican city

U.S.
Ambassador Tony Garza described the shots as "fired in the vicinity" of the consulate and said he was suspending all visa services there while officials assess the security situation

"My highest priority is the security of our Embassy and Consulate community and those Mexicans who visit our facilities," he said

Garza thanked the Mexican government for its quick response and said U.S.
law enforcement officials would work closely with their Mexican counterparts to investigate the incidents

It was unclear why the consulate would come under attack

Mexico is caught in a rising tide of drug-related killings that have been fueled by warring drug cartels and a government effort to crack down on them.
Thousands have been killed so far this year.
