************************************ Workers Displaced By Explosion ************************************
By Bonita Cornute
The day ended early for hundreds of people who work in the Carondelet Plaza complex
Those workers thought they were going to get back to their desks Thursday, but they soon learned the building would not be safe for their return until Friday
Cell phones turned out to be lifelines for displaced workers. Many of them, like Tim Simpson with The Sound Room, heard the explosion, “As I was walking I heard a loud boom, like a metal plate being dropped. Something like that”
Hundreds of people work in the offices above the parking garage. Tenants in the building include accountants and law firms, like Husch-Blackwell-Sanders. Two hundred attorneys and another 100 legal assistants were forced outside
Joe Nassif with Husch-Blackwell-Sanders explained, “We get paid for our time and if we can't be at our desks, we can't bill any time. But the biggest impact, we're concerned for the people involved and the injuries”
Steve Hall, with America Transportation, is based in the nearby Ritz Carlton, “I came here to get my log for the next trips and unfortunately they evacuated the building”
Erich Steinbock, the manager of the Ritz, says more then 200 guests and 120 employees were evacuated. But hotel executives say safety is more important then lost revenue, “That's the last thing of our worries now. We will see how it comes out. We will do whatever it takes to make everybody feel as comfortable as possible, we'll worry about the money later”
Many workers had to walk several flights to the lobby
Nassif said, “The person in charge of our evacuation was advising us to leave and as we were walking down, there was blood in the stairway”
One of the evacuated workers said she had to leave so quickly she didn't have time to grab her purse or the keys to her house. That probably happened to a lot of them. But they all managed to find transportation home.
