WASHINGTON -- The ongoing disarray among Pakistan's new civilian leadership, including its refusal to accept a U.S. military training mission for the Pakistani army, has led to intense frustration within the Pentagon and reignited a debate over whether the U.S.should act on its own against extremists operating in Pakistan's northwestern tribal regions
Any Pentagon support for more direct action in Pakistan would be a significant shift for military brass, who for months have resisted a push from other parts of the U.S.government, primarily counter-terrorism officials within the CIA, who have favored large-scale covert operations to go after the Al Qaeda leadership
The internal debates have taken on new urgency amid U.S. intelligence warnings that Al Qaeda and other militant groups are flourishing in northwestern Pakistan. At the same time, there is a growing belief within the U.S.government that the new leadership in Islamabad has proved to be ineffectual and is preoccupied with internal squabbling in the wake of former President Pervez Musharraf's resignation
Thursday's bombing of a munitions plant in Pakistan that killed at least 78, for which the Taliban claimed responsibility, has added fuel to U.S. concerns.Attacks by the Taliban and other militants have also been increasing in Afghanistan, and military commanders have said safe havens within Pakistan are responsible for the rising violence in both countries
"Radical terrorist groups in the border regions have undermined and fought against the central government of Pakistan and carved out sanctuaries and training bases," said a senior U.S.officer in Afghanistan
"They have come back, and they are presenting a significant challenge." Like others interviewed for this article, the officer spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity surrounding U.S.-Pakistan relations
U.S. military leaders have resisted suggestions for direct intervention in Pakistan out of concern that it would alienate what is supposed to be a friendly government and might lead to an explosion of anti-U.S. sentiment, and possibly violence, among Pakistanis. KABUL (Reuters) - Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Sunday threatened to send troops into Pakistan to kill Taliban militants if they pursued cross-border attacks into Afghanistan
Pakistan said any action against militants on its soil would be undertaken only by its own forces
Self-proclaimed Pakistani Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud and other Taliban officials in recent weeks have vowed to send fighters into Afghanistan to battle Afghan and foreign forces
"This means that Afghanistan has the right of self defense," Karzai said, when asked to comment on the threats
"When they cross the territory from Pakistan to come and kill Afghans and kill coalition troops, it exactly gives us the right to go back and do the same Therefore, Baitullah Mehsud should know that we will go after him now and hit him in his house"
Pakistan's Foreign Ministry spokesman said Pakistan had a clear position that U.S-led coalition forces and Afghan forces could take whatever action they wanted against militants in Afghanistan but on the Pakistani side of the border only Islamabad's own forces were allowed to operate
"The spokesman emphasized that any statement that negated this basic principle neither helped in the war on terrorism nor promoted stability in the region," the official Associated Press of Pakistan reported
Pakistan, wary of a backlash from Pashtun tribes living on its long border with Afghanistan, has ruled out allowing foreign troops to operate on its territory, though U.S forces have carried out several airstrikes inside Pakistan targeting al Qaeda militants and their allies
Eleven Pakistani paramilitary soldiers were killed in an air raid by U.S-led coalition forces against the militants on the border this week
Both Afghanistan and Pakistan, who have uneasy ties and border disputes, are allies of the United States in its war against al Qaeda and the Taliban

WASHINGTON, DC -- Yesterday's extraordinary simultaneous ouster of the Secretary of the Air Force and the Air Force chief of staff, followed by the naming of Trilateral Commissioner and Carter administration veteran James Rodney Schlesinger to purge USAF generals and colonels, dramatically documents the fact that power in Washington DC is no long in the hands of the Bush-Cheney-neocon clique, but has passed to the Brzezinski-Trilateral faction
Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced the firing of Air Force Secretary Michael W. Wynne and Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. T.Michael Moseley, citing the failure of the Air Force to maintain the security of strategic nuclear forces, as shown in the infamous rogue B-52 incident of late August 2007, when a B-52 intercontinental strategic bomber with six nuclear armed cruise missiles flew from North Dakota to Louisiana totally outside of the purview of the USAF command control and communications systems Gates also mentioned that four high-tech electrical nosecone fuses for Minuteman nuclear warheads were sent to Taiwan in place of helicopter batteries, along with other failures
Gates is a leading member of the Principals' Committee, an interagency group which now runs the US government from day to day with scant reference to the discredited outgoing lame ducks Bush and Cheney, who stay on mainly as figureheads. The Principals' Committee has been in charge of the US government since no later than early May, around the time of the Indiana and North Carolina primaries, when the controlled corporate media began trumpeting that Obama was the winner of the Democratic nomination. The Principals' Committee is made up of Pentagon boss Gates, Secretary of State Rice, NSC director Hadley, Joint Chiefs of Staff head Mullen, intelligence czar McConnell, along with a few others. These figures are now marching to the tune of Trilateral Commission bigwigs like Zbigniew Brzezinski, Joseph Nye, and the Rockefeller family.These are the same forces who own and control the Wall Street Manchurian candidate Obama It is notable that the high- profile purge of the USAF came less than 48 hours after Obama had unilaterally proclaimed himself the Democratic presidential nominee

Source reports published by Wayne Madsen suggest that the B-52 was stopped by patriotic low-level USAF personnel. As the issue of whether to allow the plane to fly on to the Middle East went up the chain of command and expanded to involve the intelligence agencies, it transpired that the majority of the government and the establishment did not want the plane to attack targets in the Middle East. The scandal of the rogue B-52 broke on September 5, and a stand-down and nuclear census of the entire USAF soon followed.According to all indications, the B-52 was under the extra-legal control of the Cheney faction, which evidently planned to fly it to the Middle East and quite possibly use one or more of the nuclear cruise missiles in an attack on Iran and/or Syria, probably in cooperation or coordination with the Israeli air attack on Syria which occurred on September 6 The fact that the B-52 was blocked may have represented the last gasp of the Bush-Cheney- neocon faction, and the beginning of the hegemony of a different and far more dangerous group, namely the Brzezinski-Trilateral faction
The Gates purge indicates that the new Trilateral masters of Washington DC do not trust the USAF generals who are so deeply compromised with the Bush-Cheney-neocon faction. The USAF was up to its neck in 9/11, and then in the rogue B-52 affair. US think tank: Pakistan helped Taliban insurgents

KABUL, Afghanistan - Pakistani intelligence agents and paramilitary forces have helped train Taliban insurgents and have given them information about American troop movements in Afghanistan, said a report published Monday by a U.S think tank
The study by the RAND Corp. also warned that the U.S will face "crippling, long-term consequences" in Afghanistan if Taliban sanctuaries in Pakistan are not eliminated
It echoes recent statements by American generals, who have increased their warnings that militant safe havens in Pakistan are threatening efforts in Afghanistan. The study was funded by the U.S Defense Department
"Every successful insurgency in Afghanistan since 1979 enjoyed safe haven in neighboring countries, and the current insurgency is no different," said the report's author, Seth Jones "Right now, the Taliban and other groups are getting help from individuals within Pakistan's government, and until that ends, the region's long-term security is in jeopardy"
Pakistan's top military spokesman rejected the findings
The study, "Counterinsurgency in Afghanistan," found some active and former officials in Pakistan's intelligence service and the Frontier Corps — a Pakistani paramilitary force deployed along the Afghan border — provided direct assistance to Taliban militants and helped secure medical care for wounded fighters
It said NATO officials have uncovered several instances of Pakistani intelligence agents providing information to Taliban fighters, even "tipping off Taliban forces about the location and movement of Afghan and coalition forces, which undermined several U.S.and NATO anti-Taliban military operations" No timeframes were given
The report said Pakistan's intelligence service and other government agencies provided Taliban and other insurgents with training at camps in Pakistan, as well as intelligence, financial assistance and help crossing the border
When asked in an Associated Press interview last month what the state of the insurgency might be in 2013, the outgoing NATO commander in Afghanistan, U.S.Gen Dan McNeill, said: "If there are going to be sanctuaries where these terrorists, these extremists, these insurgents can train, can recruit, can regenerate, there's still going to be a challenge there"
Afghan President Hamid Karzai has pleaded with the world community to address the issue of militant sanctuaries in Pakistan.Afghan intelligence officials say young, uneducated males are recruited in the border tribal areas to become suicide bombers and fighters After battles or attacks in Afghanistan, militants flow back into Pakistan to rest and rearm, officials say
Pakistan — which supported the Taliban regime in Afghanistan before the Sept 11 attacks — denied it is supporting the insurgents, but acknowledged the problem of militant infiltration
"Whenever these kinds of places are identified or pointed out, action is taken against these places and there are umpteen examples in the past where the actions have been taken against these insurgents, or, for that matter, foreigners," said Pakistan military spokesman Maj. Gen.Athar Abbas "Therefore, we reject this claim of sanctuaries being aided by Pakistan's army or intelligence agencies"
Pakistan Interior Ministry chief Rehman Malik said Monday that he met with Karzai in the Afghan capital over the weekend, and the two sides agreed to set up biometric screening at key border checkpoints
Malik said tens of thousands of people cross each day without any documentation
"They go without any checking — no passport, no documentation.It's a free for all," he told reporters He said the new computerized system would begin operating within two weeks
Nevertheless, he defended Pakistan's efforts to police the border, saying the government had deployed 120,000 troops and had set up five times more border posts than there are on the Afghan side
Malik expressed willingness to share intelligence on extremists and conduct joint operations with Afghan security forces He denied that Pakistan would strike peace deals with terrorists in order to calm Islamic militancy on its own soil
Pakistan has insisted it is only pursuing negotiations with militant groups willing to lay down their arms, and it has relied partly on tribal elders to mediate A handful of deals have already been struck
U.S officials say attacks where American troops operate in eastern Afghanistan have gone up significantly since those deals were reached earlier this year
The study said that besides the Taliban, other major militant groups find sanctuary in Pakistan These include al-Qaida, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar's radical Hezb-i-Islami group and the Haqqani network, led by Jalaluddin Haqqani and his son, Siraj
"These insurgent groups find refuge in Pakistan's Federally Administered Tribal Areas, North West Frontier Province, and Baluchistan Province," RAND said in a news release "They regularly ship weapons, ammunition and supplies into Afghanistan from Pakistan, and a number of suicide bombers have come from Afghan refugee camps based in Pakistan"
The report also called on the U.S and its allies to help build the Afghan security forces, particularly the police, and to improve the quality of local governments, especially in rural regions
It also claimed that Afghanistan's police are incompetent and "almost uniformly corrupt," echoing frequent criticism of the police by international officials here
The U.S is spending billions of dollars to train and equip the Afghan police, but the efforts are still years away from being completed

Neoliberal elite Zbigniew Brzezinski, one of the leading architects of the "war on terrorism” across the Middle East and the Eurasian subcontinent (and whose book The Grand Chessboard: American Primacy and Its Geostrategic Imperatives laid the groundwork for 9/11) has adopted a politically expedient wolf-in-sheep’s clothing role
His much-publicized criticisms of Bush-Cheney’s “mismanagement” of Iraq (whose latest piece, The Smart Way Out, serves as a primer on the current neoliberal war policy) has garnered raves from those who are misguided or ignorant enough to believe that Brzezinski is, in any way, “antiwar”
The key passage in the new Brzezinski piece leaves no illusions that that neoliberal position maintains the existing "anti-terrorism" pretext for endless war: "The end of the occupation will thus be a boon for the war on al-Qaeda, bringing to an end a misguided adventure that not only precipitated the appearance of al-Qaeda in Iraq but also diverted the United States from Afghanistan, where the original al-Qaeda threat grew and still persists"
What Brzezinski seeks is to simply reverse the Bush-Cheney “blunder,” and return to the geostrategic position achieved shortly after 9/11: " . . . a regional conference should be convened to promote regional stability, border control and other security arrangements, as well as regional economic development -- all of which would help mitigate the unavoidable risks connected with U.S disengagement"

WASHINGTON -- The ongoing disarray among Pakistan's new civilian leadership, including its refusal to accept a U.S. military training mission for the Pakistani army, has led to intense frustration within the Pentagon and reignited a debate over whether the U.S.should act on its own against extremists operating in Pakistan's northwestern tribal regions
Any Pentagon support for more direct action in Pakistan would be a significant shift for military brass, who for months have resisted a push from other parts of the U.S.government, primarily counter-terrorism officials within the CIA, who have favored large-scale covert operations to go after the Al Qaeda leadership
The internal debates have taken on new urgency amid U.S. intelligence warnings that Al Qaeda and other militant groups are flourishing in northwestern Pakistan. At the same time, there is a growing belief within the U.S.government that the new leadership in Islamabad has proved to be ineffectual and is preoccupied with internal squabbling in the wake of former President Pervez Musharraf's resignation
Thursday's bombing of a munitions plant in Pakistan that killed at least 78, for which the Taliban claimed responsibility, has added fuel to U.S. concerns.Attacks by the Taliban and other militants have also been increasing in Afghanistan, and military commanders have said safe havens within Pakistan are responsible for the rising violence in both countries
"Radical terrorist groups in the border regions have undermined and fought against the central government of Pakistan and carved out sanctuaries and training bases," said a senior U.S.officer in Afghanistan
"They have come back, and they are presenting a significant challenge." Like others interviewed for this article, the officer spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity surrounding U.S.-Pakistan relations
U.S. military leaders have resisted suggestions for direct intervention in Pakistan out of concern that it would alienate what is supposed to be a friendly government and might lead to an explosion of anti-U.S. sentiment, and possibly violence, among Pakistanis. KABUL (Reuters) - Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Sunday threatened to send troops into Pakistan to kill Taliban militants if they pursued cross-border attacks into Afghanistan
Pakistan said any action against militants on its soil would be undertaken only by its own forces
Self-proclaimed Pakistani Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud and other Taliban officials in recent weeks have vowed to send fighters into Afghanistan to battle Afghan and foreign forces
"This means that Afghanistan has the right of self defense," Karzai said, when asked to comment on the threats
"When they cross the territory from Pakistan to come and kill Afghans and kill coalition troops, it exactly gives us the right to go back and do the same Therefore, Baitullah Mehsud should know that we will go after him now and hit him in his house"
Pakistan's Foreign Ministry spokesman said Pakistan had a clear position that U.S-led coalition forces and Afghan forces could take whatever action they wanted against militants in Afghanistan but on the Pakistani side of the border only Islamabad's own forces were allowed to operate
"The spokesman emphasized that any statement that negated this basic principle neither helped in the war on terrorism nor promoted stability in the region," the official Associated Press of Pakistan reported
Pakistan, wary of a backlash from Pashtun tribes living on its long border with Afghanistan, has ruled out allowing foreign troops to operate on its territory, though U.S forces have carried out several airstrikes inside Pakistan targeting al Qaeda militants and their allies
Eleven Pakistani paramilitary soldiers were killed in an air raid by U.S-led coalition forces against the militants on the border this week
Both Afghanistan and Pakistan, who have uneasy ties and border disputes, are allies of the United States in its war against al Qaeda and the Taliban

WASHINGTON, DC -- Yesterday's extraordinary simultaneous ouster of the Secretary of the Air Force and the Air Force chief of staff, followed by the naming of Trilateral Commissioner and Carter administration veteran James Rodney Schlesinger to purge USAF generals and colonels, dramatically documents the fact that power in Washington DC is no long in the hands of the Bush-Cheney-neocon clique, but has passed to the Brzezinski-Trilateral faction
Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced the firing of Air Force Secretary Michael W. Wynne and Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. T.Michael Moseley, citing the failure of the Air Force to maintain the security of strategic nuclear forces, as shown in the infamous rogue B-52 incident of late August 2007, when a B-52 intercontinental strategic bomber with six nuclear armed cruise missiles flew from North Dakota to Louisiana totally outside of the purview of the USAF command control and communications systems Gates also mentioned that four high-tech electrical nosecone fuses for Minuteman nuclear warheads were sent to Taiwan in place of helicopter batteries, along with other failures
Gates is a leading member of the Principals' Committee, an interagency group which now runs the US government from day to day with scant reference to the discredited outgoing lame ducks Bush and Cheney, who stay on mainly as figureheads. The Principals' Committee has been in charge of the US government since no later than early May, around the time of the Indiana and North Carolina primaries, when the controlled corporate media began trumpeting that Obama was the winner of the Democratic nomination. The Principals' Committee is made up of Pentagon boss Gates, Secretary of State Rice, NSC director Hadley, Joint Chiefs of Staff head Mullen, intelligence czar McConnell, along with a few others. These figures are now marching to the tune of Trilateral Commission bigwigs like Zbigniew Brzezinski, Joseph Nye, and the Rockefeller family.These are the same forces who own and control the Wall Street Manchurian candidate Obama It is notable that the high- profile purge of the USAF came less than 48 hours after Obama had unilaterally proclaimed himself the Democratic presidential nominee
The rogue B-52 flew with six nuclear cruise missiles from Minot AFB North Dakota to Barksdale AFB Louisiana last August 30. Source reports published by Wayne Madsen suggest that the B-52 was stopped by patriotic low-level USAF personnel. As the issue of whether to allow the plane to fly on to the Middle East went up the chain of command and expanded to involve the intelligence agencies, it transpired that the majority of the government and the establishment did not want the plane to attack targets in the Middle East. The scandal of the rogue B-52 broke on September 5, and a stand-down and nuclear census of the entire USAF soon followed.According to all indications, the B-52 was under the extra-legal control of the Cheney faction, which evidently planned to fly it to the Middle East and quite possibly use one or more of the nuclear cruise missiles in an attack on Iran and/or Syria, probably in cooperation or coordination with the Israeli air attack on Syria which occurred on September 6 The fact that the B-52 was blocked may have represented the last gasp of the Bush-Cheney- neocon faction, and the beginning of the hegemony of a different and far more dangerous group, namely the Brzezinski-Trilateral faction
The Gates purge indicates that the new Trilateral masters of Washington DC do not trust the USAF generals who are so deeply compromised with the Bush-Cheney-neocon faction. The USAF was up to its neck in 9/11, and then in the rogue B-52 affair. The Trilaterals are accordingly driving out the old rogues, and replacing them with new rogue generals of their own, who are loyal to the insane Trilateral agenda. US think tank: Pakistan helped Taliban insurgents

KABUL, Afghanistan - Pakistani intelligence agents and paramilitary forces have helped train Taliban insurgents and have given them information about American troop movements in Afghanistan, said a report published Monday by a U.S think tank
The study by the RAND Corp. also warned that the U.S will face "crippling, long-term consequences" in Afghanistan if Taliban sanctuaries in Pakistan are not eliminated
It echoes recent statements by American generals, who have increased their warnings that militant safe havens in Pakistan are threatening efforts in Afghanistan. The study was funded by the U.S Defense Department
"Every successful insurgency in Afghanistan since 1979 enjoyed safe haven in neighboring countries, and the current insurgency is no different," said the report's author, Seth Jones "Right now, the Taliban and other groups are getting help from individuals within Pakistan's government, and until that ends, the region's long-term security is in jeopardy"
Pakistan's top military spokesman rejected the findings
The study, "Counterinsurgency in Afghanistan," found some active and former officials in Pakistan's intelligence service and the Frontier Corps — a Pakistani paramilitary force deployed along the Afghan border — provided direct assistance to Taliban militants and helped secure medical care for wounded fighters
It said NATO officials have uncovered several instances of Pakistani intelligence agents providing information to Taliban fighters, even "tipping off Taliban forces about the location and movement of Afghan and coalition forces, which undermined several U.S.and NATO anti-Taliban military operations" No timeframes were given
The report said Pakistan's intelligence service and other government agencies provided Taliban and other insurgents with training at camps in Pakistan, as well as intelligence, financial assistance and help crossing the border
When asked in an Associated Press interview last month what the state of the insurgency might be in 2013, the outgoing NATO commander in Afghanistan, U.S.Gen Dan McNeill, said: "If there are going to be sanctuaries where these terrorists, these extremists, these insurgents can train, can recruit, can regenerate, there's still going to be a challenge there"
Afghan President Hamid Karzai has pleaded with the world community to address the issue of militant sanctuaries in Pakistan.Afghan intelligence officials say young, uneducated males are recruited in the border tribal areas to become suicide bombers and fighters After battles or attacks in Afghanistan, militants flow back into Pakistan to rest and rearm, officials say
Pakistan — which supported the Taliban regime in Afghanistan before the Sept 11 attacks — denied it is supporting the insurgents, but acknowledged the problem of militant infiltration
"Whenever these kinds of places are identified or pointed out, action is taken against these places and there are umpteen examples in the past where the actions have been taken against these insurgents, or, for that matter, foreigners," said Pakistan military spokesman Maj. Gen.Athar Abbas "Therefore, we reject this claim of sanctuaries being aided by Pakistan's army or intelligence agencies"
Pakistan Interior Ministry chief Rehman Malik said Monday that he met with Karzai in the Afghan capital over the weekend, and the two sides agreed to set up biometric screening at key border checkpoints
Malik said tens of thousands of people cross each day without any documentation
"They go without any checking — no passport, no documentation.It's a free for all," he told reporters He said the new computerized system would begin operating within two weeks
Nevertheless, he defended Pakistan's efforts to police the border, saying the government had deployed 120,000 troops and had set up five times more border posts than there are on the Afghan side
Malik expressed willingness to share intelligence on extremists and conduct joint operations with Afghan security forces He denied that Pakistan would strike peace deals with terrorists in order to calm Islamic militancy on its own soil
Pakistan has insisted it is only pursuing negotiations with militant groups willing to lay down their arms, and it has relied partly on tribal elders to mediate A handful of deals have already been struck
U.S officials say attacks where American troops operate in eastern Afghanistan have gone up significantly since those deals were reached earlier this year
The study said that besides the Taliban, other major militant groups find sanctuary in Pakistan These include al-Qaida, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar's radical Hezb-i-Islami group and the Haqqani network, led by Jalaluddin Haqqani and his son, Siraj
"These insurgent groups find refuge in Pakistan's Federally Administered Tribal Areas, North West Frontier Province, and Baluchistan Province," RAND said in a news release "They regularly ship weapons, ammunition and supplies into Afghanistan from Pakistan, and a number of suicide bombers have come from Afghan refugee camps based in Pakistan"
The report also called on the U.S and its allies to help build the Afghan security forces, particularly the police, and to improve the quality of local governments, especially in rural regions
It also claimed that Afghanistan's police are incompetent and "almost uniformly corrupt," echoing frequent criticism of the police by international officials here
The U.S is spending billions of dollars to train and equip the Afghan police, but the efforts are still years away from being completed

Neoliberal elite Zbigniew Brzezinski, one of the leading architects of the "war on terrorism” across the Middle East and the Eurasian subcontinent (and whose book The Grand Chessboard: American Primacy and Its Geostrategic Imperatives laid the groundwork for 9/11) has adopted a politically expedient wolf-in-sheep’s clothing role
His much-publicized criticisms of Bush-Cheney’s “mismanagement” of Iraq (whose latest piece, The Smart Way Out, serves as a primer on the current neoliberal war policy) has garnered raves from those who are misguided or ignorant enough to believe that Brzezinski is, in any way, “antiwar”
The key passage in the new Brzezinski piece leaves no illusions that that neoliberal position maintains the existing "anti-terrorism" pretext for endless war: "The end of the occupation will thus be a boon for the war on al-Qaeda, bringing to an end a misguided adventure that not only precipitated the appearance of al-Qaeda in Iraq but also diverted the United States from Afghanistan, where the original al-Qaeda threat grew and still persists"
What Brzezinski seeks is to simply reverse the Bush-Cheney “blunder,” and return to the geostrategic position achieved shortly after 9/11: " . . . a regional conference should be convened to promote regional stability, border control and other security arrangements, as well as regional economic development -- all of which would help mitigate the unavoidable risks connected with U.S disengagement"
