BRUSSELS, Belgium: The EU will spend almost €400 million on research and investments in robotics over the next two years, the European Commission said Tuesday

The amount — double the EU spending in recent years — is warranted for robotic automation is essential to European manufacturing, the commission said in a statement

It estimated annual growth in the robotics sector at up to 15 percent a year over the next three years

It said number of service robots in the EU — that are typically used in warehouses, car washes and agriculture — will total 75,000 in 2010, up from 40,000 in 2006

"Automation plays a key role in ensuring a sustainable production and minimizing wasteful use of resources (and) contribute to help Europe's aging society by compensating for a declining labor force," the commission said

Roughly one third of all industrial robots are produced in Europe, The current world market for industrial robots is about €4 billion, according to the International Federation of Robotics

The 350-pound MAARS (Modular Advanced Armed Robotic System) machine can carry a 40mm grenade launcher or a M240B medium machine gun Or, if the robot's operators want their killer 'bot to be a little less-lethal, the thing can be equipped with a laser dazzler, a loudspeaker, or pepper spray

After years of safety testing and modifications, three of MAARS kill-bot predecessors were sent to Iraq in 2007 But after nearly nine months in the field, safety concerns (among other reasons) have kept those machines from firing a shot in combat

So MAARS' makers keep emphasizing how safe their lethal machine is. Software controls allow the robot's driver to select fire and no-fire zones. A mechanical range fan keeps MAARS' gun pointed away from friendly positions. "MAARS was developed with safety as the number one goal... [and] will continue to be tested exhaustively under various conditions in the coming months to ensure full compliance with standards and a safety release for fielding," the company says in a statement, which goes on to reinforce that the robot is "human-operated"

SAN DIEGO -- The Navy's MDARS-E is an armed robot that can track anything that moves. Told that I was the target, the unmanned vehicle trained its guns on me and ordered, "Stay where you are," in an intimidating robot voice.

The MDARS-E (Mobile Detection Assessment and Response System - Exterior) robot is an armed, unmanned vehicle that can navigate complicated environments autonomously. Decked out with a wide array of high-tech sensors and controlled by a sophisticated software system, the MDARS-E gives the recent Darpa (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) challenge participants a run for their money.

As it's cruising, it reports its findings in real time to a guard station
