OK the first link is good info on storing food. What I have done is to buy based on our personal preferences. Get a vacuum sealer like Seal a Meal or similar, a pressure canner and grain mill if possible, these are important, canning meat, fruit and veggies is the economical way to go, visit your local farmers market. Next, determine, according to how many you have to feed, at roughly 1500 calories a day, what it is you like to eat, most things can be stored vacuum sealed, canned or frozen, for 15+ months. Keep in mind nutritional value, that is why I included the last link for green foods, sprouting seeds is also a cheap and easy way to provide live food, the very best overall.

I have in my storage rice, white, brown and wild, pinto beans, quinoa, lima beans, canned cheese and butter, canned chicken,turkey,tuna, etc. canned black and kidney beans, freeze dried fruits and veggies, mushrooms, powdered eggs, powdered milk, flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, yeast, salt, herbs and spices, dried fruit, power bars, olive oil, canned tomatoes, olives, tomato sauce, 10 year vitamins, whole grain pasta, whole kamut wheat berries, mustard, whole popcorn for grinding corn meal, barley, honey plus all my garden produce frozen, and I don't even know what else! The point is, get what you like and need, lack of variety is a major problem, especially if you have children.
Keep in mind the trading factor, your neighbors likely won't be prepared so buy extra salt, flour and sugar, these are valuable commodities!
