Buddha VonStrangehate says: Yes, the FEMA cars that everyone has been talking about are what’s called “car racks” mostly used for Auto Transport. My dad’s civy job was working for CSX (starting way back in the 60’s when it was Atlantic Coast line); so “auto racks” were nothing new to me. Actually auto racks are pretty boring and old hat for train buffs. They used to be open decks, that is you could see the autos as the train passed. I even have an old toy version of one for hot wheels cars. After years of the Railroads being sued for Vandals breaking the windshields, busting tires, etc. by throwing rocks or even shoot BBs at the passing train. They started putting those vented sides on them.

However, the New “AUTOMAX” cars are built really well “WEIRD” There’s no outside ladders, there’s cushioned benches on either side. You can see them in the Honda dealer commercial presentation below. Also instead of vented sides they have small windows and inch thick ARMOURED sides (what are they afraid someone is going fire rockets at these things?) Plus, they're guarded against moisture and AIR BOURNE CONTAMINATES? Why do you need to protect autos from sand, dust or whatever; even new cars. Doesn't that mean they can hermetically seal these things with their own climate control (that's what's implied). VERY EXPENSIVE for just asset protection. Also, the “Tie downs” which hook to the axle of each vehicle are solid shafts instead of the old chains that are connected to the floor; the shafts in the video are part of the benches/walkway. They do resemble shackles, more like what shackles would be hooked to. I could see a chain gang being walked down both sides of these things and being connected to the floor with a single click.

The doors are automatic at both sides. Why do you need automatic doors on a “car rack?” That is unless you had to open and close them remotely for some reason.
And the ladders which the yard crews use to gain access to the top of the car and upper decks--- ARE ON THE INSIDE? (you can see them in the Honda video)
They are also modular. The first “car rack” I’ve ever seen that was Modular. The interior upper decks can be raised or lowered automatically.
