Burlington is one of nine test markets in the country taking part in a flu pandemic preparation exercise

The experiment will focus on prevention-- like hand washing-- and what to do in case of an outbreak

Health authorities say preparing is crucial because it's not a question of if we will have another major flu outbreak, but when

"Knowing how often these things tend to cycle, we've had the three in the last century, and it's been long enough since the last one-- we are due. And I think the other thing that people have in mind is the avian influenza, or bird flu," said Dr.
Wendy Davis, Vt Health Commissioner

"So I think it's critical, if and when it happens, that more people are prepared for it So that's why it really is one thing we have to do together," said Mayor Bob Kiss, P-Burlington

Authorities say people should stock up on a two-week supply of food in case of an outbreak, be able to recognize flu symptoms and have a plan in place should schools and offices be shut down
