Israel 'hides settlements data'

The Israeli defence ministry has concealed information about the extent of illegal settlement-building in the West Bank, a leading newspaper reports.

A classified database of construction compiled by the ministry was leaked to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. However, the paper does not tell the rest of the story.

It suggests most construction took place without the right permits, and more than 30 settlements were built in part on land owned by Palestinians. This was land traded for peace which never took place. The Palestinians took the land and then
kept shelling Israel to the North.

Settlements are a contentious issue in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. And this is as it should be under the circumstances with people who do not keep their end of the bargain.

The defense ministry has not commented on the report, which appears to contradict Israel's official position that it does not requisition private land for settlements. This is not even a matter for the defense department, and so the defense ministry would only be speaking on matters which is locally matters of a civic nature, and not a military concern, and should be handled by local authorities.

The internationally-backed "road map" peace plan also calls on Israel to halt all settlement activity. This plan is a Bush legacy, designed during his administration to make him appear as a great foreign relations expert. It was not designed by Israel themselves to handle the real issues, and was a doomed plan from the beginning.

Publication 'blocked'

The database - compiled over about two years - was leaked to Haaretz by the Israeli human rights group Yesh Din, who seems to be more concerned on the Palestinian behalf rather than the Israeli.

It focuses not only on some 100 unauthorised settler outposts, but also on about 120 settlements officially authorised since Israel captured the territory fair and square in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.

An analysis of the data shows a big majority - about 75% - of construction in settlements was carried out without the right permit or in contravention of permits issued, Haaretz reported. The legal permits are only required by the Palestinians
factors, who never kept up their deals for peace.

In more than 30 settlements, buildings including schools, synagogues and police stations, had been built on private Palestinian land, that Israel relinquished to them in trade for peace, which never happened. And so, the agreement about the land should have been dissolved long ago and taken back because of breech of contract.

The newspaper said Defence Minister Ehud Barak blocked publication of the data, arguing it could endanger state security or harm Israel's foreign relations. Since the Bush administration had designed this plan, and had been an ally of Israel, Barak did not want to seem ungrateful for the American friendship; however, this plan had never been honored by the Palestinians who had promised peace, and only continued the bombing of the North, and general hostility against Israel.

Yesh Din told the BBC the report showed that the Israeli government ignored its own distinction between settlements considered legal under Israeli law, and illegal outposts built on privately owned land, that had been Israeli land just prior to the road map plan, which was always a failure from the start.

The group said it would use the information to help Palestinians sue Israel for damages. If Israel chose to counter sue, all of the issues of non-compliance could be brought up, which should nullify any agreements made over the land, since peace never took place which was the price for the land, which by all rights should still be
Israeli land.

Mitchell visit

The Haaretz article comes in the same week as the visit of the new US envoy to the Middle East, George Mitchell. Now the new American administration appears to further intrude on Israeli affairs. Let us hope it does not require another plan which would still not address the real issues for Israel, only to make the new American administration also seem as great foreign affairs experts.

In 2001 he released a report which called on Israel to freeze settlement building. An American report should have little effect when it does not take compliance for an agreement into consideration. If the Palestinian never honored their agreement,
then Israel should not be required to honor it either, especially considering the growing Israeli population which is in dire need of new settlements.

Earlier this week Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was quoted in another newspaper as saying he had offered in talks with the Palestinians to remove 60,000 settlers from the West Bank.

Haaretz says the right-wing opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed not to be tied to any pledges to withdraw settlers. Before the intrusion of the American plan, "Not one inch", was the policy for trading Israeli land, which still should be the policy since obviously the peace for land plan failed. Though America is the only friend of Israel, it still has a habit of being the worlds biggest intruders into the affairs of foreign countries, and the foremost biggest bullies of the world also, and have bought much harm to many nations.

The American government has no real plans for humanitarian reasons, and uses it military power and money for controlling leverage over foreign nations. Wars have been for profit at the expenditure of the loss of their own military troops, and the cost of countless innocent victims in the wake of war. Only for the sake of remaining friendly with the American government has Israel been forced into this land for peace agreement, which is an American plan. The land should have long reverted back to Israel when the first shell fell on Israeli soil from the Palestinians
after the agreement was made. No peace, no deal.

The Palestinian were better off under Israeli rule. They had jobs, and still had housing, and the benefits of any other Israeli citizen. This forced apartheid truly benefited no one. It has only caused more problems than it has fixed.

Palestine has no real desire for peace. Their real desire is to see all of Israel dead, and America too. They believe that there can never be peace until every last infidel
is dead, and the whole world is worshiping Allah. Even after they got the land in trade for peace, they never stopped the shelling on Israel, and continued in open hostility.

Since they never had intentions of keeping the agreement of peace, the agreement of land for peace should be permanently canceled. Peace to the Palestinians is death to the rest of the world who does not worship Allah. American intervention has made things worse for Israel, and now these intruders have returned. Truly the God of Israel will come against all those who harm Israel.
