"Hey, What are your thoughts on the Karaites?"
Mar Yeshua, the Jewish Sages and The Oral Torah
Mar Yeshua observed and taught from both the Written and the Oral Torah of his day and age. Profs. David Flusser and Brad Young have demonstrated this time and again in their works.
In the mind of Mar Yeshua, one could not separated the Written Torah from the Oral Torah. (See further, Ellis Rivkin's book, "
A Hidden Revolution: The Pharisee's Search for the Kingdom Within"). Why? Because he was educated in both and because he would have seen himself as a link in that chain going back to Har Sinai (
Pirkei Avot 1:1). Mar Yeshua told his disciples to do and observe
ALL the things that the Scribes and P'rushim, who sit in the Seat of Mosheh, instructed them to do and observe, that would include
even the burdensome things, regardless of whether or not these Sages of the P'rushim practiced what they preached.
Why would Mar Yeshua have said such a thing? Even the burdensome things that the P'rushim themselves didn't do? Why? Well, there are several reason.
First, Mar Yeshua promoted making peace with one's enemies. The Mishnah states that an emeny is a disassociated brother-neighbor with whom one hasn't spoken to for three days due to enmity. So, one is to "go the extra mile" in order to uproot intramural hatred, which, according to the Talmud, was the reason that the Second Temple was destroyed. (See further, Rabbi Lazer Brody's
video - "Uprooting Hatred").
Second, those who are peacemakers shall be called the Sons of HaShem, right? Wasn't Mar Yeshua's mission in life to rescue the lost and show them through his teachings and by his example how to become the Sons of HaShem via
teshuvah (turning to HaShem in repentance) and
emunah (i.e., total trust in and complete faithfulness to HaShem)...?
Yes, I know that Xian theology has a far more "Christ-centric" take on that, which, IMO, removes Mar Yeshua from his Jewish context and robs his message of
teshuvah and
emunah of its power and replaces it with the Cult of Personality and even a Cult of Death. "Why do anything but worship Jesus and warm a pew, especially when he's already done everything for us? We're just poor old sinners, who've been saved by grace." Such is the Xian and, more often than not, the Messianic mindset - "Get your 'Golden Atonement Ticket' and wait for the Rapture Train to arrive and whisk you away to the Heavenly Chocolate Factory! Swing low, sweet chariot!" What happened to being Sons and Daughters of HaShem and a light to the Nations and the salt of the Earth and tikkun olam (repairing the world) and working out one's wholeness/salvation and being a Co-Working Partners with HaShem and Joint Heirs of the Patrimony!?
Third, Mar Yeshua embodied all of the
48 middot (virtues) and most of these relate to study and/or putting one's study into practice and among them number
Shimush Chachamim (Attending unto the Sages) and
Emunat Chachamim (Trusting in the Sages).
Now then.... If a doctor tells you not to smoke, because smoking can cause lung cancer and yet you see him smoking ... does that negate the validity of his statement that smoking can cause lung cancer? Certainly not! It just means that he's unwilling to practice what he preaches. The same holds true for the Oral Torah.
The Karaites, the Neo-Karaites and the Oral Torah
The Karaites (and Nehemiah Gordon and all the various Neo-Karaites and all the anti-Nomian and anti-Rabbinic Xians and Messianics have) divorced themselves from
Klal Yisrael and separated themselves from the spiritual Commonwealth of Yisrael. Why? What have they truly gained in the process? Freedom? There is no freedom without the Law. Freedom and liberty must be experienced under the Law, because you can't experience true freedom and liberty outside of the Law.
Why not? Because the Spirit of Lawlessness only leads one to a life of bondage to one's own Evil Inclination, which enthrones itself as the "Supreme Judge" of what's right and what's wrong. In so doing, one is able to rationalize any action and every action imaginable. But isn't that what free-will is all about? Absolutely not!
Ask yourself this.... Does your free-will really belong to you or to HaShem? Just like your soul ... your free-will is only given to you on loan, because they both belong to HaShem! Our free-will has been given to us for the sole purpose that we may use it to choose life, instead of death. That was the whole purpose behind putting the Tree of Knowledge in the Gan Eden to start with! See further, Rabbi Yerachmiel Milstein's

But What About The Apostle Paul?
Paul was not the author of the antinomian faith and religion that people mistakenly label "Pauline Christianity." Paul wasn't opposed to the Written or the Oral Torah! The ruling in Acts 15 that only required that HaShem Fearing non-Jews avoid the same
Cardinal Sins, that the Jews themselves must ultimately avoid, was itself a ruling based upon the Oral Torah of that period!
What Paul was against was the proto-Gnostic demand that the non-Jews must be circumcised in order to be saved. However, according to
Walter Schmithals, their circumcision was not the Torahic ritual of circumcision that is only required of Jews and full-converts to Judaism! Rather, they had reinterpreted circumcision and made it part of their "salvific gnosis" and a ritualistic "casting off" of the foreskin, which, per their Platonian worldview, was part of the corruption and impurity of this material universe.
So, this proto-Gnostic circumcision was a symbolic "casting off" of the flesh in which the
Stoicheion (Heavenly Bodies; Archons; planetary gods; cf.
Gal. 4:8-9) have imprisoned mankind. In short, if one wanted to avoid being reincarnated into a new bodily prison, they'd have to prove to the Stoicheion that they wished to escape the corruption of this material world so that their soul could return to the
Pleroma (Fullness of the G_dhead).
Also, their outward show of circumcision had the added benefit of making them look Jewish in the eyes of the Roman authorities (not to mention real Jews), which meant that they could claim protection under the
religio licita that the Jews enjoyed. Further, it allowed these proto-Gnostics to boast about and glory in their powers of persuasion (
Gal. 5:26;
Gal. 6:13). Additionally, in getting non-Jews to be circumcised ... it served to validate their claims of being true "pneumatic" Apostles of G-d, rather than being a mere Emissary (
Sh'liach) of men, which is what they accused Paul of being - probably because Paul had been given letters by Ya'akov HaTzadiq (a.k.a. James the Just), which authorized Paul to pronounce this decree and to collect charity (Acts
15:23f;
16:3f) in the Diaspora for the poor Chasidim in Yisrael, etc.
Put yourself in the shoes of these proto-Gnostics for a minute.... If people were willingly to undergo circumcision, because that's what you told them that the
Pleroma (G_dhead) wants them to do, then ... what better validation could you have of your authority to act as an "pneumatic" Emissary of the Divine? You preach and the people obey; ergo, you must be of G-d, right? Isn't this argument still being used by many to this very day!? "I must be
of G-d, because people are doing exactly what I'm telling them to do! And those who don't are obviously of the Devil!"
This was the mentality behind these proto-Gnostics, but Paul argued that if a non-Jew underwent circumcision, for whatever reason, then ... they'd be obligated to act as a full-convert to Judaism. In Paul's mind, the logic ran like this ... "If you're going to look like a Jew and try and pass yourself off as a Jew, then you'd better behave like a Jew and observe the whole Torah!" However, Paul understood that full-conversion WAS NOT required of non-Jews and, at least according to Mar Yeshua's followers, who accepted the rulings of the House of Hillel regarding the status of
Gerim Toshav (Repentant Strangers), the HaShem Fearing non-Jews had been given this liberty in Mashiach and this freedom under the Oral Torah that Mar Yeshua himself taught and practiced!
Therefore, far from being antinomian ... Paul was promoting the Oral Torah of his day and age! And far from telling his Jewish disciples to eschew the Oral Torah of the P'rushim ... Mar Yeshua told his Jewish disciples to do and observe everything the P'rushim told them to do and observe, because he didn't dispute their authority to sit in the Seat of Mosheh!
