Despite efforts by proponents of implantable identification microchips to popularize them, most Americans are strongly against the use of VeriChip

In 2004, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted clearance for VeriChip, an identification system using implantable Radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology, consisting of a handheld reader, a microchip approximately the size of a grain of rice (containing a unique 16-digit ID number), which is implanted in the right arm, and a database

VeriChip Corporation, the producer of the microchips, considers them as a fast and secure way of accessing medical information for thousands of patients brought in emergency departments either unconscious or unable to communicate due to medical conditions

The US and certain other countries are currently implanting these microchips in the body of infants.
There has also been talk of replacing ID and credit cards with VeriChip

However, there has been widespread opposition to the product as these microchips not only allow authorities to control ones private life, but there is also the danger of hackers getting their hands on personal information

On the other hand, the VeriChip seems to have been only a means of distracting the public from a far more sophisticated project, conducted by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) -- the central research and development organization for the US Defense Department

DARPA has been investing in a new implantable chip called Multiple Micro Electrode Array (MMEA); a chip which is surgically implanted directly into a human nerve or into specific area of the brain and connects the brain to a computer

While the medical advantages of these implantable microchips cannot be denied, a grain of rice in the right arm may prove to be much more decisive

Perhaps the Wachowski brothers were right about a computer-controlled world of the future

It is coming - Korea is building an entire city based on RFID microchip technology as an ultimate experiment for the world to see - When global economies collapse, the global population will be forced to get microchipped to create a CASHLESS control grid, tracked wherever you go on the planet, and if you are found to be a disobedient slave, you will be 'switched off' and killed

IMAGINE public recycling bins that use radio-frequency identification technology to credit recyclers every time they toss in a bottle; pressure-sensitive floors in the homes of older people that can detect the impact of a fall and immediately contact help; cellphones that store health records and can be used to pay for prescriptions

These are among the services dreamed up by industrial-design students at California State University, Long Beach, for possible use in New Songdo City, a large "ubiquitous city" being built in South Korea

A ubiquitous city is where all major information systems (residential, medical, business, governmental and the like) share data, and computers are built into the houses, streets and office buildings New Songdo, located on a man-made island of nearly 1,500 acres off the Incheon coast about 40 miles from Seoul, is rising from the ground up as a U-city

Although there are other U-city efforts in South Korea, officials see New Songdo as one apart. "New Songdo will be the first to fully adapt the U-city concept, not only in Korea but in the world," said Mike An via an e-mail message.
Mr An is the chief project manager of the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority, the government agency overseeing the project

In the West, ubiquitous computing is a controversial idea that raises privacy concerns and the specter of a surveillance society (They'll know whether I recycled my Coke bottle?!) But in Asia the concept is viewed as an opportunity to show off technological prowess and attract foreign investment

"Korea has gathered the world's attention with its CDMA and mobile technologies," Mr. An wrote, referring to digital cellular standards.
"Now we need to prepare ourselves for the next market," which he said was radio-frequency identification, or RFID, and for U-cities South Korea's Ministry of Information and Communication has earmarked $297 million to build an RFID research center in New Songdo

Fulfilling this ambition, to a large degree, resides with John Kim, a 35-year-old Korean-American who leads New Songdo's U-city planning.
Mr Kim is vice president for strategy at New Songdo City Development, a joint venture of the Gale Company, an American developer, and POSCO E&C, a subsidiary of South Korea's giant steel company

Mr Kim, formerly a design leader at Yahoo, said the city's high-tech infrastructure will be a giant test bed for new technologies, and the city itself will exemplify a digital way of life, what he calls "U-life"

2057 is a Discovery Channel television program hosted by theoretical physicist Michio Kaku It premiered on January 28, 2007 and attempts to predict what the world will be like in 50 years based on current trends The show takes the form of a docu-drama with three separate episodes, each having informative stories ingrained into the plot

The City

"The City", examines the advances futuristic technology will bring to the home such as humanoid robots and holographic pets The storyline has Paul, a thirteen year old boy accidentally releasing his holographic shark friend into the city's computer program, halting major city functions and electronics

The year is 2057. Everything is computerized from cars to buildings to clothing. One of the main characters is young Paul Gator, son of a female police officer Georgina Gator.
John Gator, Paul's grandfather, was born at the dawn of the internet (he'd be about Paul's age today making him a member of Generation Y) and has been writing computer code ever since Paul is somewhat of an apprentice to his hacker grandfather, and is already manipulating code at a very young age

Holograms are commonplace in 2057, and most children have holograph projectors embedded within their clothing. These devices project images of anything, which act like GPS devices to guide children around the city of the future safely.
When his grandfather creates a hologram shark to replace the dolphin that he currently has, Paul decides to go one step further He uses his laptop to hack into the city's network in an attempt to display his shark on advertisement boards across the city

Not only does the laptop project the shark onto every holographic video screen in the city, it overloads the entire network and cripples the entire city. The laptop also carried with it an ancient virus that the future city had no protection against. The virus attacks the operating system that the entire city is run on...an operating system that has been in place, untouched for decades

The only possible suspect to Georgina is her father, whom had moved out of her house earlier in the day after a fight about his computer hacking.
An APB is put out on him, and it's a race against time to stop the virus while Paul and his grandfather try to evade the law When Georgina discovers that Paul was actually the one who released the virus into the city, she protects them from capture and allows them access into the old, unused central hub of the city

Once inside the hub, grandfather and grandson immediately connect John's laptop into a connection that can communicate with the operating system that the city is built on. Paul's grandfather erases incriminating personal information about Paul that was transferred to the system, then codes a few lines before the police burst in the room.
Brave Paul stands in front of his Grandfather, protecting him from the guns the police are pointing at them as he finishes the last lines of code When his Grandfather presses enter, the city's power ominously flickers off

A few moments later, the power is restored and the city jumps back to life.
The virus and shark are gone, and life in the city goes back to normal Realizing that her father is a hero, Georgina makes amends and all is well in the city of tomorrow

It may seem like a vision of a distant science fiction world, but this scenario laid out by Adam Greenfield, author of "Everyware: The Dawning Age of Ubiquitous Computing", could be just around the corner. In fact, at this very moment in South Korea an entire city, a "U-city", is being built that utilizes ubiquitous technology.
It had it's first test run in March of last year Several other countries are currently planning, or are currently building cities modeled around South Korea's U-city

What exactly is Ubiquitous Computing?

An "Everyware" world, as Adam Greenfield calls it, is a world in which computers are embedded and merged seamlessly everywhere in the environment. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags communicate their position and other information constantly in a vast network. Everyday objects become "searchable" as if they were part of the interconnected world wide web.
Surveillance in an "Everyware" world is perfected to a degree that is unimaginable Scientific management of people and the environment we inhabit becomes possible, and marketers' ultimate dreams come true

As computer chips become smaller and their processing power increases exponentially, ubiquitous computing has become a practical reality As Wired News reports, ubiquitous systems are to be rolled out in New York City next year,

"The Architectural League of New York invites architects, artists, designers, technologists, engineers, urbanists, or teams thereof, to submit qualifications for an exhibition that will critically explore the evolving relationship between ubiquitous/pervasive computing and urban architecture

The League will commission five to seven teams to develop urban interventions–to be installed in and around New York City in spring 2009–that will imagine alternative trajectories for how various mobile, embedded, networked, and distributed forms of media, information and communication systems might inform the architecture of urban space and/or influence our behavior within it"

Consumer convenience is a central selling point for ubiquitous computing technology. The well established consumer base for mobile devices was discussed at the March 2008 International Conference on the Internet of Things in Zurich, Switzerland (sponsored by Google, IBM and others) as serving as a means of acclimating individuals to the presence and use of ubiquitous technology.
Possible marketing plans were discussed to introduce "self scanning" through the use of mobile devices to "scan" physical products and browse the items on digital mobile screens in a manner similar to internet shopping Andreas Schaller, a senior engineer for Motorola, presented information to the Zurich conference Schaller's presentation is outlined in the conference proceedings,

Religious fundamentalists in West Virginia are now being exempted from getting their digital photos emblazoned on their driver's licenses, after objections over carrying around what they conceive as the biblical "mark of the beast"

Although objecting West Virginians will still be required to have their license photos taken at a state Department of Motor Vehicles office, their photos will be removed from its computer immediately afterward, with the state retaining hard copies of the pictures at its main office
