Magic mushrooms, which contain the psychedelic chemical psilocybin
.. Edited extract from an interview Pamela Sakuda did for researchers on the psilocybin experience - "As the session began, and as it built up, I felt this lump of emotions welling up and firming up almost like an entity. I started to cry a little. Then it started to dissipate and I started to look at it differently and I think that is the beauty of being able to expand your consciousness. I don't think the drug is the cause of these things. I think it is a catalyst that allows you to release your own thoughts and feelings from some place that you have bound them to very tightly. I began to realise that all of this negative fear and the guilt was such a hindrance to making the most of and enjoying the healthy time that I'm having - however long it may be. I was not utilising it to the best and enjoying my life because I was so afraid of what wasn't there yet. These substances occur in our natural world and people have been using them for thousands of years to treat physical illness, to treat social and behavioural problems"
******************************************************** Clinical trials test potential of hallucinogenic drugs to help patients with terminal illnesses ********************************************************
• First test of 'psychedelic psychotherapy' since 70s • Researchers hope effects will improve quality of lifeJames Randerson
The Guardian UK, Tuesday August 12, 2008
Scientists are exploring the use of psychedelic drugs such as LSD to treat a range of ailments from depression to cluster headaches and obsessive compulsive disorder
The first clinical trial using LSD since the 1970s began in Switzerland in June. It aims to use "psychedelic psychotherapy" to help patients with terminal illnesses come to terms with their imminent mortality and so improve their quality of life
Another psychedelic substance, psilocybin - the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, has shown promising results in trials for treating symptoms of terminal cancer patients. And researchers are using MDMA (ecstasy) as an experimental treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder
In the Swiss trial eight subjects will receive a dose of 200 microgrammes of LSD. This is enough to induce a powerful psychedelic experience and is comparable to what would be found in an "acid tab" bought from a street drug dealer. A further four subjects will receive a dose of 20 microgrammes. Every participant will know they have received some LSD, but neither the subjects nor the researchers observing them will know for certain who received the full dose. During the course of therapy researchers will assess the patients' anxiety levels, quality of life and pain levels
Before hallucinogenic drugs became popular with the counter culture, they were at the forefront of brain science. They were used to help scientists understand the nature of consciousness and how the brain works and as treatments for a range of conditions including alcohol dependence
Charles Grob, a professor of psychiatry at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Centre, is in the vanguard of the resurgence of scientific interest in psychedelics, having recently completed a trial that used psilocybin to help patients with terminal cancer come to terms with their illness. "I think there's a perception these compounds hold untapped potential to help us understand the human mind," he said
The way hallucinogens such as LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide), psilocybin and mescaline (the active ingredient in the peyote cactus) act on the brain is reasonably well understood by scientists. The drugs stick to chemical receptors on nerve cells that normally bind the neurotransmitter serotonin, which affects a broad range of brain activities. But how this leads to the profoundly altered states of consciousness, perception and mood that typically accompany a "trip" is not known
Entrepreneurial mycologist Paul Stamets seeks to rescue the study of mushrooms from forest gourmets and psychedelic warlords The focus of Stamets' research is the Northwest's native fungal genome, mycelium, but along the way he has filed 22 patents for mushroom-related technologies, including pesticidal fungi that trick insects into eating them, and mushrooms that can break down the neurotoxins used in nerve gas There are cosmic implications as well Stamets believes we could terraform other worlds in our galaxy by sowing a mix of fungal spores and other seeds to create an ecological footprint on a new planet "Once you’ve heard 'renaissance mycologist' Paul Stamets talk about mushrooms, you'll never look at the world -- not to mention your backyard -- in the same way again " - Linda Baker, Salon. com
****************************************************** Study finds long benefit in illegal mushroom drug ******************************************************
In 2002, at a Johns Hopkins University laboratory, a business consultant named Dede Osborn took a psychedelic drug as part of a research project
She felt like she was taking off She saw colors Then it felt like her heart was ripping open
But she called the experience joyful as well as painful, and says that it has helped her to this day
"I feel more centered in who I am and what I'm doing," said Osborn, now 66, of Providence, R. I "I don't seem to have those self-doubts like I used to have I feel much more grounded (and feel that) we are all connected"
Scientists reported Tuesday that when they surveyed volunteers 14 months after they took the drug, most said they were still feeling and behaving better because of the experience
Two-thirds of them also said the drug had produced one of the five most spiritually significant experiences they'd ever had
The drug, psilocybin, is found in so-called "magic mushrooms" It's illegal, but it has been used in religious ceremonies for centuries
The study involved 36 men and women during an eight-hour lab visit It's one of the few such studies of a hallucinogen in the past 40 years, since research was largely shut down after widespread recreational abuse of such drugs in the 1960s
The project made headlines in 2006 when researchers published their report on how the volunteers felt just two months after taking the drug The new study followed them up a year after that
Experts emphasize that people should not try psilocybin on their own because it could be harmful Even in the controlled setting of the laboratory, nearly a third of participants felt significant fear under the effects of the drug Without proper supervision, someone could be harmed, researchers said
Osborn, in a telephone interview, recalled a powerful feeling of being out of control during her lab experience. "It was ... like taking off, I'm being lifted up," she said Then came "brilliant colors and beautiful patterns, just stunningly gorgeous, more intense than normal reality"
And then, the sensation that her heart was tearing open
"It would come in waves," she recalled "I found myself doing Lamaze-type breathing as the pain came on"
Yet "it was a joyful, ecstatic thing at the same time, like the joy of being alive," she said She compared it to birthing pains "There was this sense of relief and joy and ecstasy when my heart was opened"
With further research, psilocybin (pronounced SILL-oh-SY-bin) may prove useful in helping to treat alcoholism and drug dependence, and in aiding seriously ill patients as they deal with psychological distress, said study lead author Roland Griffiths of Johns Hopkins
Griffiths also said that despite the spiritual characteristics reported for the drug experiences, the study says nothing about whether God exists
"Is this God in a pill? Absolutely not," he said
The experiment was funded in part by the National Institute on Drug Abuse The results were published online Tuesday by the Journal of Psychopharmacology
Fourteen months after taking the drug, 64 percent of the volunteers said they still felt at least a moderate increase in well-being or life satisfaction, in terms of things like feeling more creative, self-confident, flexible and optimistic And 61 percent reported at least a moderate behavior change in what they considered positive ways
That second question didn't ask for details, but elsewhere the questionnaire answers indicated lasting gains in traits like being more sensitive, tolerant, loving and compassionate
Researchers didn't try to corroborate what the participants said about their own behavior But in the earlier analysis at two months after the drug was given, researchers said family and friends backed up what those in the study said about behavior changes Griffiths said he has no reason to doubt the answers at 14 months
Dr Charles Grob, a professor of psychiatry and pediatrics at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, called the new work an important follow-up to the first study
He said it is helping to reopen formal study of psychedelic drugs Grob is on the board of the Heffter Research Institute, which promotes studies of psychedelic substances and helped pay for the new work
Phellinus linteus
The fungus may combat breast, prostate, skin and lung cancers
************************************************** The yellow mushroom that could fight cancer **************************************************
An exotic mushroom could help in the fight against cancer, it emerged yesterday
Tests show extracts from Phellinus linteus, a yellow tropical fungus, can combat breast, prostate, skin and lung cancers
It is thought the mushroom, a mainstay of Oriental medicine since ancient times, stops blood vessels from growing and feeding tumours
Study of the fungus, which grows on the bark of dead mulberry trees, could lead to the development of new anti-cancer drugs
Alternatively, the extract itself may be used to treat patients Dietary supplements could even help ward off the cancer in healthy individuals, the US researchers believe
Scientists from the Methodist Research Institute in Indianapolis showed that a powdered extract of the mushroom can halt the growth of breast cancer cells
Experiments suggest it does this by blocking an enzyme involved in the development of the blood vessels needed to nourish the growth and spread of cancer cells
Lead researcher Dr Daniel Sliva said: "We saw a number of positive results from our investigation of aggressive human breast cancer cells, including a lower rate of uncontrolled growth of new cancer cells, suppression of their aggressive behaviour and the formation of fewer blood vessels that feed cancer cells' essential nutrients"
Previous studies have shown the mushroom is also effective against prostate, lung and skin cancers
Together with breast cancer, they kill more than 55,000 Britons a year
Dr Sliva, whose results are published in the British Journal of Cancer, said the extract may have a place alongside conventional cancer drugs and help develop new medicines or supplements
However he urged people not to buy the extract until further tests show it to be safe and effective, saying there were also concerns that some powders are of poor quality or even dangerous
Those wishing to boost their health should instead make the sort of mushrooms readily available in supermarkets part of their everyday diet, said Dr Sliva
Dr Lesley Walker, of Cancer Research UK, said: "Although natural products have been used to develop many important drugs, there is no guarantee that they are all safe or will be effective in the clinic
"Further research is needed to know if mushroom extracts can be used to treat cancer patients"

Fungi could help clean up toxic war zones, scientists at a Scottish university have discovered
Dundee University researchers have found evidence that fungi can "lock" depleted uranium into a mineral form
This would make it more difficult for the heavy metal - used in armour-piercing shells - to find its way into plants, animals or the water supply
The fungal-produced minerals are capable of long-term uranium retention, the scientists say
Prof Geoffrey Gadd, from the university's College of Life Sciences, said: "This work provides yet another example of the incredible properties of micro-organisms in effecting transformations of metals and minerals in the natural environment
"Because fungi are perfectly suited as biogeochemical agents - often they dominate the biota in polluted soils, and play a major role in the establishment and survival of plants through their association with roots - fungal-based approaches should not be neglected in our attempts to deal with metal-polluted soils"
The testing of depleted uranium ammunition and its recent use in Iraq and the Balkans had led to contamination of the environment with the unstable metal, said Prof Gadd, who heads the Division of Molecular and Environmental Biology at Dundee
Depleted uranium differs from natural uranium It is the by-product of uranium enrichment for use in nuclear reactors or nuclear weapons and is valued for its very high density
Although less radioactive than natural uranium, depleted uranium is just as toxic and poses a threat to people
In the new study, the researchers found that free-living and plant fungi can colonise depleted uranium surfaces and transform the metal into uranyl phosphate minerals
Professor Gadd said that while they likely still posed some threat, "the fungal-produced minerals are capable of long-term uranium retention, so this may help prevent uptake of uranium by plants, animals and microbes It might also prevent the spent uranium from leaching out from the soil"
The research, published in the journal Current Biology, concludes that the discovery could lead to uranium-polluted soils eventually being brought back into use
The ruined remains of Chernobyl have become a source of several environmental mysteries Rapid adaptation of rodents, the swift return of nature and now extremely happy fungi that seem to be feeding on waste radiation
According to the research of some folks at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Cryptococcus neoformans is converting radiation into fuel This could mean that fungus is the solution to two of our greatest environmental problems, lack of fuel and too much radioactive waste
All we need to do is surround our nuclear waste with this radiation-eating fungus and then harvest it every once in a while to produce some kind of bio-fuel I doubt we have enough radioactive waste to feed enough fungus to run America's automobile fleet, but that's hardly something to complain about
It looks like melanin (the same melanin found in human skin) plays the roll of chlorophyl in this 'radiosynthesis' After taking in the radio waves, the melanin starts off a reaction that allows the fungus to grow The scientists speculate that the fungus could be used for bio-fuel farms in high-altitude areas with low-light and high-radiation Or they could be food for astronauts on long-haul, nuclear-powered missions
In any case, now we know that life will continue even if the light of the sun disappeared, because fungi in Chernobyl will continue to eat left-over radiation for centuries And isn't that just the beginning of a wonderful sci-fi novel
********************************************** Eating Radiation: A New Form of Energy? **********************************************
In a bizarre alternative to photosynthesis, some fungi "eat" radiation--with the role of chlorophyll taken by melanin, a chemical also found in human skin
Technology Review Tuesday, May 29, 2007
Here's a possible solution to both the energy crisis and what to do with highly radioactive waste from nuclear reactors: use the radiation as food
It sounds like something out of a comic book, although scientists already know that fungi will eat asbestos, jet fuel, and plastic It has also been shown to decompose hot graphite in the ruins of the Chernobyl power plant, which melted down in 1986 The plant's release of large amounts of radiation appears to have attracted black hordes of fungi But how does it work?
According to Ekaterina Dadachova and her colleagues at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, in New York City, the fungi Cryptococcus neoformans and two other species use melanin, also a pigment found in human skin, to transform radiation into energy to use as food for growth Researchers believe that melanin is present to protect fungi from stress, such as radiation, and that certain species use this molecule for metabolic reactions Dadachova's lab discovered that exposure to radiation caused the melanin in these species to change shape, increasing its ability to impact metabolism and growth The results appear in Public Library of Science (PLoS)
For the BBC Two series Cooking in the Danger Zone, food writer Stefan Gates travels to Chernobyl in Ukraine and meets people who live and eat in the "radioactive zone"
"Niet! Niet!" screamed the cook
I had asked her if it was possible to eat any of the local food, to which she replied: "Good God, no We don't eat fish, meat, fruit We don't eat anything It's all contaminated You can't You can't"
In 1986, the world's worst nuclear accident took place at Chernobyl Power Plant here in northern Ukraine when an explosion blew the top off reactor number four and a fire sent plumes of radioactive material into the air, contaminating much of Europe
Today a vast exclusion zone, the size of Lancashire, encircles Chernobyl and much of the land is still radioactive
Despite this, several thousand people still work here decommissioning the plant, so the Chernobyl canteen cook has to import food from the farthest reaches of Ukraine
'Zone of Alienation'
It turns out that the Chernobyl "Zone of Alienation" is home to several hundred mainly elderly people living illegally in the area, and their attitude to the risks of radiation is very different
Anna has stubbornly refused to leave her home
Anna is a wonderful, garrulous 83-year-old babushka who has returned to the Zone of Alienation
She was outraged to hear that the BBC had instructed me not to eat any of her food and she began a sustained bullying campaign, saying: "What's wrong with you? There's nothing to fear from my food - God will protect you"
Her reasoning was pretty simple: "If it were contaminated we would have died a long time ago, but we've been eating it for 20 years already!"
The ultimate test
It did seem odd that we were filming a fabulous cook making food but could not eat it
Anna kept chipping away at my resolve, saying: "Just eat it! You won't die God will protect you We eat it and we're alive and you'll be alright too!"
I felt much more comfortable with the idea after Anna forced several glasses of her plum moonshine down my throat
My producer Marc Perkins was hissing: "You're NOT allowed to eat it," but when she produced her homemade butter and our local guides made me more confident by tucking in, my resolve crumbled
I fell upon the food, much to her admiration
It was just pork fat soup, but it tasted deep, smoky and very, very Ukrainian
Admittedly, the fear of radiation had made my taste buds extra sensitive, but I felt much more comfortable with the idea after Anna forced several glasses of her plum moonshine down my throat
Standard of living
The nearest functioning town to the Zone of Alienation is Slavutych, a town built to re-house workers who continued to work at the nuclear plant after the accident (strange though it may seem, the other three nuclear reactors at Chernobyl were restarted six months later and continued to operate until 2000)
Slavutych is only 50km (31 miles) from Chernobyl and land around here was also contaminated by the accident
The local market even has a radiation testing lab and stallholders have to have their produce tested regularly
Despite this, the residents are remarkably sanguine about radiation
Lena Vasilenko, an English teacher, explained to me that radiation effectively provides Slavutych with employment and a higher standard of living than the rest of Ukraine, and the construction of the town was 85% funded by the company running Chernobyl
Conditions here are better than in the rest of Ukraine, which is still recovering from the post-Soviet reform
Death toll
We ate lunch with Lena's friends Yuri, Denis, Natasha and Anatoly, who seemed to be in denial about radiation
"Nothing's happened yet," they say
Yuri echoes a widely-held belief that vodka absorbs and flushes radiation out of the system, a dangerous attitude in a country so fond of hard liquor that 38% of men are classified as "heavy alcohol users"
The real toll of the disaster is highly disputed, with the authorities - represented by the Chernobyl Forum - predicting the total final number of deaths at 4,000
Greenpeace, however, suggest 270,000 cases of cancer attributable to Chernobyl fallout with around 93,000 of these fatal
If these numbers are right, it seems highly dangerous to turn a blind eye to radiation
We were shocked to see that the mushrooms were eight times over the safe levels
'National character'
The future for the Slavutych now looks bleak as jobs at Chernobyl begin to disappear
We met up with the town mayor, who was keen to put a glossy spin on the situation and took us mushroom-picking to prove his point
Mushrooms are one of the foods most susceptible to radioactive contamination but Ukrainians love them, and in the forest next to the town, we found a carpet of fine ceps
"None of the land around here is dangerous," he enthuses, "it's not a problem we have"
Just to be sure, we took the mayor's mushrooms to the market testing-station and had them checked for radiation poisoning
Both the inspector and myself were shocked to see that they were eight times over the safe levels
I called the mayor to warn him but he just said: "It doesn't matter"
I asked if he was really going to eat them and he said: "Yes No problem"
I was shocked, but Lena said: "A lot of people are eager to come here to work and we pay this price of not paying attention to radiation"
Ukraine has a history of suffering The country was on the frontline of world wars, faced appalling famines under Stalin and has been trying to rebuild itself since the fall of communism
I ask if this attitude to radiation is part of the Ukrainian national character and Lena sighs "Ah, yes, we are used to suffering"
On our last day in Ukraine I had a full body radiation check, which discovered unusually high radiation in my stomach
The doctor told me that the levels were reasonable for someone who was just visiting the area briefly, and that I would return to normal pretty soon, but I realised that Lena and her friends were almost certainly being affected by the foods they ate
They were gambling with their health
The Chernobyl canteen cook was right Just say "niet" But the people of Slavutych feel as though they have little choice
Lena's friend Natasha put it very simply: "Why are we so tolerant? Radiation feeds us"

FRANCIS CRICK, the Nobel Prize-winning father of modern genetics, was under the influence of LSD when he first deduced thedouble-helix structure of DNA nearly 50 years ago
The abrasive and unorthodox Crick and his brilliant American co-researcher James Watson famously celebrated their eureka moment in March 1953 by running from the now legendary Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge to the nearby Eagle pub, where they announced over pints of bitter that they had discovered the secret of life
Crick, who died ten days ago, aged 88, later told a fellow scientist that he often used small doses of LSD then an experimental drug used in psychotherapy to boost his powers of thought He said it was LSD, not the Eagle's warm beer, that helped him to unravel the structure of DNA, the discovery that won him the Nobel Prize
Despite his Establishment image, Crick was a devotee of novelist Aldous Huxley, whose accounts of his experiments with LSD and another hallucinogen, mescaline, in the short stories The Doors Of Perception and Heaven And Hell became cult texts for the hippies of the Sixties and Seventies. In the late Sixties, Crick was a founder member of Soma, a legalise-cannabis group named after the drug in Huxley's novel Brave New World. He even put his name to a famous letter to The Times in 1967 calling for a reform in the drugs laws
It was through his membership of Soma that Crick inadvertently became the inspiration for the biggest LSD manufacturing conspiracy-the world has ever seen the multimillion-pound drug factory in a remote farmhouse in Wales that was smashed by the Operation Julie raids of the late Seventies
A series of interview clips from DMT: THE SPIRIT MOLECULE, the movie -Due out before 2009
Why is DMT illegal if it occurs naturally in everyones brain
DMT - Dimethyltryptamine, is a NATURAL brain hormone produced in our very own brain, it is part of the tryptamine family which includes serotonin, melantonin, psilocybin (magic mushroom), and even LSD
DEA and FDA had BANNED DMT as class 1 drug alongside crack and heroin - that means our head is producing an illegal 'halucinogen' in our brain EVERY NIGHT and we should all be jailed for possessing it in our brain
This is our CONSCIOUSNESS PEOPLE, and the corporate government is trying to BLIND and DESTROY OUR 3rd EYE and 6th chakra (Pineal Gland which produces DMT) by adding FLUORIDE in water and toothpaste – to imprison our natural way of thinking and turn us into consumer slaves who cannot think for ourselves and realize our potential
EVERYONE SHOULD TRAVEL TO SOUTH AMERICA AND DO AYAHUASCA (DMT tonic) AND WAKE UP and realize who you all REALLY ARE! We are SPIRITUAL and MULTIDIMENSIONAL BEINGS!
Ayahuasca vision by shaman painter Pablo Amaringo

Eddie with Dr Luis Eduardo Luna and author Graham Hancock
Eddie’s ayahuasca (key ingredient DMT dimethytryptamine) experience in Brazil (2006) - DMT is naturally produced in our brain (pineal gland, the 3rd eye - literally because in amphibian species their pineal gland has retina and cornea), every night when we sleep. It is basically the key hormone that takes us to the 'subconscious' reality, a waking dream so to speak. That was when I encountered 3 majestic 'light' humanoid beings, with long tubey arms waving at me inside this incredible 'space hull' plastered with Maya like hieroglyphic motion graphics and buttons. They warned me telepathecally that the world is heading towards an 'end' and I must leave my city which was Los Angeles. That was 2 years ago I had seen them before in vague form, when I was a regular user of psilocybin (magic mushroom which is another tryptamine psychedelic like DMT and LSD), but I never communicated back then
The subconscious world is more real than this reality, and we are indeed living in a holographic quantum 3D projection, because when I was under ayahuasca all my senses were crosswired, namely smelling the music and tasting the colors, that was when 'they' explained to me that all our human senses are just frequencies, all along the same spectrum There is no 'particle' exactly, just waves, everything is energy, living or 'dead'
There is a lot of mystery which people have taken granted, because our senses are so dumbed down and they are adding fluoride in our water and toothpaste Fluoride is highly deposited in the pineal gland, for obvious reasons
.. Fear Factor's Joe Rogan talks about his incredible experience in smoking DMT crystal
Author and DMT avocate Dr Rick Strassman (pt 1) - He conducted DEA FDA approved DMT injection experiments on 60 live subjects - his book 'DMT The Spirit Molecule' is a MUST READ
My hero alternative historian Graham Hancock (Fingerprints Of The Gods) talks about his ayahuasca experiment and his book 'SUPERNATURAL'
.. Graham Hancock on Conscious Media Network - full video at www
This book is amazing and is a must-read, everyone should understand what DIMETHYTRYPTAMINE (DMT) is all about - it is produced naturally in our '3rd eye' or '6th chakra' - the PINEAL GLAND - it is indeed, the SPIRIT MOLECULE that is released during our 'subconscious' state during sleep and deep meditation
Dr Rick Strassman conducted the only DEA FDA approved live-subject DMT injection experiment on 60 people from all walks of life, and the effect and testimonies are astounding - the Ebook at the bottom is a must read (I recommend purchasing a copy)
